We love this place, as it is quirky and interesting and full of character. Downsides include parking, as the carpark is difficult to access and spaces are few and far between, and the allowance of dogs, particularly as my daughter is terrified of them which meant our visit was cut very short. Can't go to Alnwick without calling in though.

Visited during a visit to Alnwick, a fantastic place for book lovers of all ages. We could have browsed for hours! Excellent selection of fiction and non fiction, lovely tea room, very quirky location - we will be back!

This is a delight. Shelves and shelves of books in every category, some obscure, some very available. You may sit around and read if you wish. You may have a cup of coffee or a meal if you like. An absolute delight, steeped in history.

This bookshop is just amazing. Filling the entirety of the old Hexham station building, it offers a huge range of books from everyday fiction to rare first editions. Armchairs and sofas encourage the very best kind of book browsing, whilst a thriving cafe offers delicious meals in front of blazing log fires. It is extremely friendly, and dogs are welcome... My family are practically bookworms! You'll go to a small library and they'd be there for hours trying to select upto six books! Once we got to Barter Books, we were speachless. From the thousands of shelves to the toy train whizzing round the roof, nothing could be better. Whilst wandering round, I was able to have a coffee and... More

Unfortunately visited during school holidays so absolutely teeming with children who were noisily having a great time! Incredible selection of books and great place for coffee and cake (including dairy free cake and soya milk)

This place is great for a mooch around and a coffee whilst reading a good book. My only gripe is that the books seem very expensive compared to online retailers with some of them being nearly two thirds of the original retail price (and I'm not talking about the collectable books) Ok for an hour or 2 though...

The most interesting large array of books with novelty of toy train running round the roof. When comparing this book shop with others selling similar books, it is pricey. You will struggle to find books under a tenner and some modern second hand books being offered not dissimilar in price to their original rrp. That said, a novel proprietor of... More

Real fires, model trains, hidden reading corners and good coffee in the old station waiting rooms. This place is awesome! We didn't eat, but the breakfasts looked good too. Definitely somewhere to visit if you are in the area! It's also dog friendly.

A total joy to visit this unusual book shop. 1000s of second hand books, a lovely cafe with excellent food, free wifi and they allow dogs.
