It's not a bookshop, it's a book cathedral! Step through the door and, if you like books just even a little bit, you will be enthralled. Standing in what was once the railway station you will be overwhelmed by the choice. Just where do you start? Some people visit every day and use it as a library. There's plenty of... More

Filled with books of all genres. Excellent secondhand bargains, if you're looking for that particular book, chances are it's here. Also great place to stop for a coffee 'n slice of cake!

A fantastic place to visit. Very quirky being the old railway station. Thousands of books, food, seating and friendly staff. You can easily spend a whole day there. I love it.

I could have spent hours here! Full of books, full of atmosphere, super friendly staff, highly organised. Dog friendly too, except in the cafe. Loads of seating areas which are very comfortable, some great finds that I'm delighted with.

I'd heard of Barter Books at the old station in Alnwick. Mind says little second hand bookshop in an ex-WH Smith corner of a run down building. Big deal- so what? First hand experience the opposite. This is a national treasure. Just visit the place, because words fail me!

Love where we live as we have some great things on our doorstep and this never disappoints. As a book fiend i can spend easily a couple of hours in here, i buy books then take them back and they buy them off me again - win win! Fab little cafe, lots of sitting and quiet areas, helpful staff, coal... More

I love Barter books just wandering around and looking at the huge choice of books is a bibliography dream. There is a choice of seating to browse the books and have a coffee the real fire is so welcoming even on a warm day. If you need specialist advice the staff are all really knowledgeable and if you can't find... More

Great books and nice staff. Some of the book pricing is inconsistent and strange but this is bound to happen with such wide stock. The food is generally good and the cafe staff are so friendly and helpful. The biggest shocker is the state of the toilets - thick dust everywhere, floors unwashed and seats unwired - they look like... More

Went today with family for breakfast which was expensive but we wouldn't have minded if the food had been good. It wasn't. The full breakfast was shocking - burnt bacon, an awful hash brown that looked like a fish cake. My niece didn't eat a single thing from her plate. On top of that the people that ordered first in... Barter books is amazing, housed in an old railway station it's not just the books that make this place worth a visit. Great restaurant, comfy chairs so you can read, interesting decoration (check out the train set.) Loads of books truly something for everyone.
