My son wanted to go here as he had heard about all the ghost stories and I think it has built it's reputation based on this heritage. It was chilly (draughty more than spine chilling) and the dungeon was not eerie - just too dark to really see the collection of torture equipment. The house itself is like walking through... More

This castle is an amazing experience so different from your normal castle visit or stately home. The collection is so eclectic, it is as if someone has gone on a mad buying trip to fill a house but it works. You are allowed to get close to the contents of all the rooms, the guides are really helpful and there... More

Perhaps we had been spoilt with visits to Bamburgh Castle, Alnwick, Cragside and even Dunstanburgh. Each room is filled with disorganised dusty junk with a few notes typed on well thumbed sheets. The macabre cellar display just left us cold. Not impressed. Felt sorry for the gardener, the hedges are well trimmed but little else to see given that Spring... More

Visited today , parked although hard to find a space on the rough ground with bricks and leaves piled up. Took the forest walkway which is a rubble path through some trees. It should have been a warning that there were no admission prices until you got to the desk. Paid against my good wishes £9.50'each and went in. The... More

What an amazing place. Visited with kids 3&10. Really old creepy feel to the castle which was great. The random mix of objects in each room was wonderful , amusing, disturbing and interesting. My 10 year old was fascinated. The ghost stories made it feel all the more atmospheric. A great afternoon out.

Interesting place, a change from our normal manicured NT visits. Felt like a very personal space with a quirky accumulation of mementoes. Spooky to boot, lots of drafty spaces and you could feel the age of the property. Cafe was excellent!

This is a privately owned place and at £23 for a family ticket it's a good spot to take the kids. It is not a polished, tarted up touristy spot it is what a castle should be...dusty, rugged and rough! The staff on hand are knowledgeable about the estate and friendly with it. On top of that the coffee shop... More

my girlfriend loves this place it is one of her treats that her and her daughters go every year and stay for a few days and partake in a ghost hunt. I had never been before nor had her youngest son so as a day trip we took a day to see the castle the grounds and even the wild... More

We expected the castle visit to be about the history of the castle and the ghosts as the most haunted castle in Europe..... but instead it seemed like a random collection of personal belongings. The case it's self was lovely, the gardens I am sure will be nice in the summer. The best thing was the lovely fire in the... More
