Behind the unobtrusive facade of Millgate House at the bottom of Richmond's Georgian Market Square lies one of the most suprising gardens in the North of England. The garden won first prize out of 3200 entries in the R H S National Garden Competition and is now a Royal Horticultural Society's "Recommended Garden". It is described in the Good Gardens Guide as "a gem""a delightful garden...skilful underplanting...never feels contrived...just natural and generous...it is a wonderful education in the handling of a small space." The garden has been featured in magazines all over the world.A recent article in the Sunday Times said..."the most densely planted garden I have ever seen." The praise is fulsome...don't miss this garden whilst in Richmond. Many return again and again at different seasons. Open Daily 10 00 am til 5 00pm April til Oct Entrance £2 00

A secret garden accessed through a door at the bottom of Richmond's cobbled marketplace. A gardener's garden, lauded by all the greats from Titchmarsh to Monty Don.

Walk through the gate and find a little piece of heaven if you love plants as I do! What has been created at Millgate House is a tapestry of different colours and shapes of foliage with no earth visible. It all looks as though it...More

It would be worth visiting Richmond just for the delight of walking round this gem of a garden although the town has other attractions to make the trip really worthwhile. Hidden behind the side door to a beautiful town house (now a B & B)...More

Stumbled across this garden after walking up the hill and seeing the sign. After hesitating for a bit (could I really go in?), I did and was delighted. Storybook pathways and unexpected views of the river work with clever topiary to make this garden utterly...More

Thank goodness for people like you! What an encouraging review. We love the garden but after some negative reviews recently from ignorant visitors we were thinking the that maybe the time had come to close for good to the public. Then up pops a review...More

This garden and it's setting is a pure delight. It is on a slope as is the whole of Richmond, this means you get to see the garden from so many viewpoints and the garden itself creates a wonderful frame for the views of Richmond....More

How lovely to have such a positive review! We were beginning to think the world was full of nay Sayers after the previous three reviews! Mind you many reacted with horror to their comments and countered with your word "inspirational" Interestingly ... on the front...More

The garden was how can I say - OK, nothing really special in our opinion, but others have rated it high. As others have said there is generally a lack of flowers & in some ways colour. Bushes & trees were often surprising and interesting...More

Hmmmm...difficult to know what to say to this kind of uninformed comment....the special nature of the garden has been celebrated by just about every garden critic and magazine there is.... and clearly Gardeners' World think it quite special having filmed here now three times. Alan...More

Precipitous terrain and less than friendly welcome at this hidden garden. Garden itself looked good but you need to be fit to access it....it's very steep with no handrails. Sorry to report that it was something of a disappointment for us.More
