Behind the unobtrusive facade of Millgate House at the bottom of Richmond's Georgian Market Square lies one of the most suprising gardens in the North of England. The garden won first prize out of 3200 entries in the R H S National Garden Competition and is now a Royal Horticultural Society's "Recommended Garden". It is described in the Good Gardens Guide as "a gem""a delightful garden...skilful underplanting...never feels contrived...just natural and generous...it is a wonderful education in the handling of a small space." The garden has been featured in magazines all over the world.A recent article in the Sunday Times said..."the most densely planted garden I have ever seen." The praise is fulsome...don't miss this garden whilst in Richmond. Many return again and again at different seasons. Open Daily 10 00 am til 5 00pm April til Oct Entrance £2 00

Precipitous terrain and less than friendly welcome at this hidden garden. Garden itself looked good but you need to be fit to access it....it's very steep with no handrails. Sorry to report that it was something of a disappointment for us.More

Thank you for helping us to raise awareness about the garden and what it does and does not offer. We do find ourselves irritated when people do not read the details which are clearly posted....for example when they come expecting not to have to pay,...More

A surprise garden in the centre of the town. Garden could do with a bit of tidying and pathways improved for the more elderly and informed visitors. Having said that there is a good selection of plants and shrubs.More

We are open seven days a week.... which leaves little time for pruning and working the garden. Your comments show that you have little understanding of what goes into a garden like this. We were pruning and topiarising trees when you were visiting... which is...More

What caused us to roam about the town looking for the garden is one of the attractions of this special place - It's understated, yet rewards those who persistent in their search. The garden emerges from the dark passage way behind the unassuming door to...More

Our visit coincided with a welcome sunny and dry August day, so we were able to sit and enjoy the garden's many intimate corners at our leisure. The fee of £2.50 per person is for charity and well worth it for such a special garden,...More

A really special place, just beyond the door. Leave the bustle of a busy touristy market town-centre and enter into a terraced leafy paradise full of fragrance, texture and colour.More

I have just run into some gardeners who were visiting for the fourth time this season having travelled from Chesterfield to see it again. They love it at every season but were especially keen to see the hydrangea sargentiana in flower. She told me that...More

Enjoy the beautiful plantings and peaceful surroundings. Sit, linger and enjoy this special place. One could only wish this was their garden.

From a permaculture perspective a brilluant garden with lots of plants trees and shrubs to be seen. I adore this garden because it is not manicured or heavily maintained. Just how a natural garden should be. Species choice is varied and I was pleasantly surprised...More

Great to have such an appreciative review from a professional gardener.... It is so rewarding when people get it and see what the garden is about.... The words inspirational, glorious, of this world have all been used recently to describe the garden.... Some one was...More

We were deeply disappointed by your comments and sad that you didn't share the excitement of so many other visitors. Only within minutes of your comments being posted I received an email from someone who visited on the same day saying they found the garden...More

Visiting this garden makes a trip to the otherwise tired looking town of Richmond worthwhile. Hidden behind an inoculous looking door on a side road off the main square, you travel down a narrow corridor to reach the terraced garden at the back of the...More
