This old Cinque Port church (Cinque Ports were the five harbour towns on the south coast which in Medieval times provided the king with ships and men in exchange for trading and other privileges) is a local landmark. Much of today's building dates from 800 years ago, though it has been altered many times. The handsome tower with its distinctive onion dome top is a 17th-century addition - built by Flemish protestant refugees, in the style of their homeland churches. The dome would have been in place when American Founding Father Thomas Paine was married at St Peter's in 1759. There was once a Norman church on the site and traces of masonry from this building can still be seen at the west end.

Not "done up" yet , like so many old churches these days [ although they are starting on it] and therefore full of quiet atmosphere. Lots of quirky monuments and details and a wonderful second hand bookstall to raise funds ! Then there is the much vaunted staircase----more a tourist attraction than an asset [ other than financially].We lost a... More

I always bring my students here & now I have added incentive as the tower is now open. We, too, had the joy of the bells as we climbed past. Very reasonably priced attraction & interesting church - friendly staff! Be aware that although they have new stairs in the upper part, the lower stairs are the originals - not... More

Interesting old church with a marvellous bell tower you can climb for a fee, although it is free to wander about the church. Also a small garden out back. Worth a visit.

Climbed the 112 steps to the top of the tower. Bells rang twice while we were up there! Very nice woman opened up for us even through the tower isn't usually open on a Monday. Views over Sandwich and beyond are spectacular!

Lovely church in a beautiful location in the heart of Sandwich. Great architecture and a lovely place to visit and reflect on the past. Whilst it is now classified as a 'redundant' church, it remains consecrated and an annual Christmas Eve communion service is held there along with a Witness Procession from the church to St Clement's every Palm Sunday.... St. Peters has now opened the bell tower to visitors. If in Sandwich don't miss the opportunity to climb the tower and experience the panoramic views from the top of the tower. During the climb you can see the inner workings of the clock and look down on the bells. It only costs £5 per person and is open from... More

A fascinating church, well worth a visit. Lovely architecture with a good little second hand bookshop at the back. We arrived to late to climb the tower but were assured that the views were well worth it.

The recent opening of the Church Tower to the public has proven to be a master-stroke as a trip up Haven Heights is a must when visiting the beautiful town of Sandwich. The cost is reasonable as the views are quite simply breath-taking when you finally reach the top. It shows the town in an entirely new light and there... More
