About
Built by the order of King Henry VIII it is one of the finest Tudor artillery castles in England, and among the earliest and most elaborate of a chain of coastal forts, which also includes Calshot, Camber, Walmer and Pendennis Castles. Today you can explore the whole of the castle, from the storerooms to the first-floor captain’s residence. Take a walk around the defences and admire the squat, rounded bastions and cannons.

Nice walk up to the castle from the town.
Popped in to the castle. Great building so much history had a good walk around. Whilst upstairs one of the guides had a interesting chat so much information to hand. Was really pleased we went inside and walked all around worth a visit pre book your visit you can save 10 % but it’s a good price any way.

    A Bit of History
As a history degree student, what a better place to go when on holiday, than a castle. Built by Henry the eighth, I learnt why this castle was built and what purposes stood for. Quite expensive to get in. Bearing in mind, there’s not many interactive experiences and there are quite a lot of rooms that don’t have things in them. Would recommend if you had half an hour to spare before you went home

    Very small
Compared to Dover, and even Walmer this place is tiny and only will take an hour or so out of your day. Definitely worth visiting Walmer at the same time. Not much to see in Deal and, other than a chalk drawing, nothing interactive going on either.

    Lots for the kids
The castle looks tiny from the outside, but inside, it's quite large & sometimes disorienting walking about in a circle, especially on the lowest floor. We thought we wouldn't be here very long, but there is quite a bit to read & for the kids to do from a big model of the castle to build, to creating your own graffiti paper as well as the wooden guns dotted about that the children can walk about with. This was a great way to spend an afternoon.

    Deal castle
We had so much fun exploring this castle. It is in the shape of the Tudor Rose and we borrowed a couple of wooden rifles and explored the dark and damp lower floors. Kids of all ages will love this little gem of a castle

    Medieval well preserved castle
This is an English Heritage site and there is parking. The staff are very friendly and described in detail to us the effect of the Goodwin Sands. The castle is well kept with multiple but sparsely furnished rooms. The ramparts are elevated giving views to the French coast. There was a moat around the castle, now grassed, which is very impressive. Worth a visit if you are in the area.

    Interesting sojourn if in area
We'd planned a couple of days around Dover and came to Deal on second day after a trip a short drive away at Walmer castle - you can cover off 3 in the area which is amazing! There are some tunnels that the kids can explore and lots of history including a lot on Henry V with some good exhibits that will keep kids of all ages entertained. Not a huge amount to see but interesting piece of history nonetheless.

Deal 🏰 with my ma 🙂
There is a small car park next to the castle, remember to get a ticket (free) even if you are a EH member. A wonderful view of the castle from the car park. My ma and I did the tunnels first, wow, we thought it was wonderful. It smells at the top of the stairs - old and damp, do not let this put you off; it is not like that in the tunnels, it is very cool. There are historians here, do take advantage of them, very interesting information. There is also vocal information by certain individuals (headphones, which are attached to certain areas). Everything was really good, we went on a very hot day, so could get tired walking up and down everywhere. There is also, where you are outside and can see the guns and look out to the sea. I would recommend a visit 🌞

    Great for all the family
Deal Castle is in the English Heritage fold. Well run, good facilities and plenty of well-designed wall information charts cover it’s long history and gives the visitor a feel for life in a Cinque Port garrison. Fairly small car park fills quickly towards midday. Reasonably accessible with wide spiral staircases between floors. Lots of interest for visitors of all ages. Very helpful staff too.

    Really interesting visit
We really enjoyed our visit to Deal Castle. Built by Henry VIIIth to defend the area From European threats. It’s a large castle and very well preserved. There is plenty of information around the castle. When we went there was a very knowledgeable man in the shop. Think his name was Ben. He was excellent and knew everything about the castle and the area. He certainly added to our enjoyment of the venue. The car park was a reasonable size with a ticket machine. It’s free to English Heritage members but you do need to have an up to date EH sticker displayed on your car. It’s well worth a visit if you’re visiting the area.

A very interesting visit with lots of information and things to see for adults. I think it would have been more helpful to have a numbered guide to help to go around as it's not clear if you have missed anything. I'm given to understand that the potential to get lost around the castle is part of the experience, but didn't find that particularly useful. Will definitely return.

Loved walking around the inside of the castle, feeling like you are lost. A very basic castle, which gives you the idea of what life would have been like for a soldier in the castle. There are plenty of things to amuse children. Lovely view out to sea.

Excellent- Volunteer on site was very good.
The blond lady was extremely informative and brought the rooms alive. She was very able to explain things and share stories and knowledge. She was the reason my mum enjoyed the visit so much!

Love how your left to look around by yourself, takes about an hour, plenty to look at inside but the basement was excellent very creepy and if you followed the outside walls you feel like your in a maze and might not get out it was really fun, fab views of the coast!

The castle was bigger than I expected, with lots of rooms. The views from the ramparts are spectacular on a clear sunny day. There are toilets and a shop, but no cafe. I would have liked a bit more information about the use of some of the rooms but overall well worth a visit.

Like Dover Castle this comes under the care of English Heritage. An hour is all you need here but make sure you enjoy the sea views from the castle. You can read the history elsewhere but it is well worth stopping in the Castle car park to visit.

Very knowledgeable and friendly staff, a very unusual castle, definitely worth a visit. Note, you do have to pay to park unless you are an English Heritage Member
