A beautifully maintained and - clearly - much-loved steam railway full of authenticity and memory-jogging artefacts. The staff -with one exception - were helpful and committed. The one exception was the woman who ran the cafe at Alresford station who was just short of rude. She was so unlike the rest of the people there, it really drew attention to... More

I took the SWT train to Alton and transferred on to the Mid-Hants platform where a steam train was waiting. I boarded it, plenty of room, and surprisingly comfortable seats. We soon chugged away from the station and after stopping at Four Marks we proceeded to Ropley where I got out and let the train continue on its way while... More

A big thank you to MHR for putting on such a good show of LMS and BR locos last weekend. I know it was billed as an S&D weekend, and that the MHR is firmly rooted in Southern Region country and traditions, but I'm an old LMS trainspotter on holiday in the area and the 4 locos rostered were a... Steam locomotives, nostalgic coaches, romantic stations, the countryside of Hampshire and Real Ale on the train, what better way to spend a weekend is there ? A great day out travelling up and down the Watercress line, stopping off at the different stations to see the restoration work on the locos, coaches and wagons. Everywhere keen, attentive, courteous volunteers .... More

My other half, & father in law, had a wonderful afternoon travelling the beautiful countryside of Hampshire, aided by a few pints of real ale 🍻🚂. A great way to relax & spend time chatting as you see the English countryside. Thank you to all the volunteers too 👋

We had a great day out travelling up and down the line while exploring all the stations. The weather was even sunny for part of the day. The pricing was good and our sausage baps first thing were delicious. I would highly recommend visiting as there is a lot to see and do! Great for the enthusiast or just the... More

Attempted to experience today's Pre Spring Steam Gala event. All designated car parks in Alresford full, gridlocked and unsupervised. Tried again in Alton. Designated car park £8! No way! Headed for home unfulfilled. MHR at least £40 poorer.

The railway recreates a forgotten age and is a wonderful experience for all generations. There is much to see at the Ropley locomotive works and a fantastic trip behind steam along the line that railway called The Alps because of the hilly terrain. Highly recommended and look at the website for special attractions.

We had a great time on the Santa Express. We were allocated seats before we got there so it was nice not to have the worry of finding seats, especially seats together as we were a group of 7. Santa comes through the train and stops at each booth so that every child gets a chance to see him and... More
