Situated in the historic market town of Berkeley, The Chantry is the striking Grade II* listed house where Edward Jenner lived for 38 years until his death in 1823. This is the house from which he pioneered vaccination against smallpox and it is now a museum celebrating his life and legacy. Discover how his work here eventually led to the eradication of smallpox and find out more about his other achievements before relaxing, as Jenner did, in an acre of peaceful gardens.

If you are visiting Berkeley Castle then do not miss this museum, though it's on quite a different scale. Edward Jenner is one of the most important men of British, indeed world, science, which should be enough to attract a visitor anyway. But his house is a delight in itself, as are the grounds and garden. There is a wealth... More

Before our visit to Berkeley I had no idea that this museum existed. We spent well over an hour here watching a video, wandering around the house and garden and learning about Dr Jenner and his work. It was an afternoon well spent and I now know much more about the development of vaccinations that I ever did before. It... More

Such an interesting place and a huge amount to take in if you read all the information available. I might need to visit a second time as I felt overloaded with information during my short visit. Lovely Queen Anne style house with wonderful garden containing many historical plants. Make sure you visit the small "Temple of Vaccinia in the grounds.... More

Walked over to this museum having first done a tour of Berkeley Castle (you should visit both venues as they are only a very short walk apart). The museum is well presented though recommend seeing the video first as it puts everything else into a context. The information is well presented in this delightful house - there is a lot... More

Thank you very much for taking the time to write a review of your recent visit to Dr Jenner's House, Museum and Garden. I am glad you enjoyed your visit. I went to the Jenner museum many years ago and having revisited with fresh, and I hope more educated eyes I realised the past and current significance of vaccination. However what was unexpected was the sense of calm and a feel for the man, his time, his family and his society. The knowledge and enthusiasm of the volunteers and staff... More

My time at the Jenner Museum and in Berkeley in general was somewhat magical. To stand at the point of origin of one of the greatest medical achievements known is incredible. To see where Dr. Jenner lived and worked puts a human face on something I had only read about and the effect is profound. It's just icing on the... More

Visited after hearing a talk by Professor Gareth Williams. An interesting and informative experience, not least the gardens and household items relating to Jenner's life and lifestyle. Looking forward to paying a return visit next season as tickets are valid for a year making this important little museum particularly good value.

We visited after going into Berkeley Castle and only expected it would be a quick pop in but if you watch the 25 min video first it makes the rest of the exhibits have greater meaning. Dr Jenner was supported by the Berkeley family who lived next door to him in Berkekley Castle. He was a man of many talents and it is said that "his work changed the world". His home is modest and of itself not worthy of the £6.95 admission fee. Children would become bored very quickly whilst adults keen on learning about... More
