Thought we'd check out the longest pier in the world so paid to ride the train that goes along the pier. Paid a stupid amount, you pay even if you want to walk along the pier! Nobody even checks if you've paid for a ticket!...More

Walked the long pier (there's an option of getting the train both ways or just one way). It's the longest pier in the world apparently but it did make for a lovely afternoon walk and great views to be seen!

We enjoyed the pier so much that we took 3 trips along it in our 5 days in Southend. The walk took us around 20-25 minutes each way and is just £1 for students. On our last trip, we opted to get the train one...More

Having last visited the pier 40 years ago it has changed beyond recognition. The lovely old electric green railway has been replaced by a rather dull navy blue diesel train. The entrance is now a characterless glass foyer and the cafe at the end is...More

Friendly staff, train station at lower level. If you want to go to end of pier allow some extra time to walk the last part.

Train is rickety and slow and costs more than a ticket to Southend airport! Not really much on pier anymore apart from a lot of older folks! Cafe at end is reasonable at best.

At 1.4miles the pier is great for a refreshing stroll out and then enjoy the lovely train ride back. RNLI centre is at the end of the pier, as is a good value cafe' and toilets.

There is an interesting display at the landward end, worth visiting if you don't go on the pier. The train journey is not that comfortable but it only lasts for about 5 minutes. When you get to the end you may wonder why you bothered...More

Yes it did burn down some years ago. It has now been restored and you can still go to the end of it although there isn't so much there as before. Didn't know about the Australian version - interesting!

Hi Vicky, Jamie Oliver only uses the café as a film set for a few weeks during the year. We use the building as a take away for ice cream, drinks and snacks during the height of the season. His family own 'Olivers On The... More
