Pay a visit to Shuttleworth in Old Warden and you will have a day out to...

Pay a visit to Shuttleworth in Old Warden and you will have a day out to remember. Shuttleworth houses a unique flying collection showcasing the first one hundred years of flight. Illustrating the history of flight from the early 1900s to the 1950s, you will see how the aeroplane operated in the pioneering years, was rapidly developed during World War I, was used for sport, pleasure and business in the 1920s and 30s and once again became a fighting machine in World War II. You can see fascinating examples ofaircraft ranging from the 1909 Bleriot XI to Supermarine Spitfire and the Hawker Sea Hurricane.

Then you can explore one of England's most delightful (and unknown) historic gardens, the Swiss Garden, created in the 19th century, when an interest in ornamental gardening and picturesque architecture first came together.

The Shuttleworth Visitor Centre is a great place to pick up some fantastic gifts, or just relax with a cup of tea and a spot of lunch in the restaurant overlooking the airfield.

Great place for all ages. Good cafe, convenient parking, helpful staff, great collection of working aeroplanes and vehicles from the Edwardian era to today. Interesting restoration aspects always entertain and inform. Adjacent Swiss Garden and Mansion House also worth a visit.

Joint top of my favourite destinations, Old Warden is a national treasure. I have a bias, since I can fly in (in my own vintage aeroplane, who feels at home) but even those with no particular obsession with old aircraft can derive huge enjoyment here. If you want detailed information, it's all there. If you want to show youngsters how... More

We had the most wonderful day out here at the end of August, and it was better than anything we could have hoped for. It was fascinating and expansive collection spanning the entire evolution of aviation. Highly informative with excellent and knowledgeable volunteers. All exhibits are meticulously restored and maintained with most kept in flying condition. A superb day out... More

Home of the Shuttleworth collection of aircraft. Easy to find and lots of parking. Day we visited had Santa arriving by airplane so lots of kids. Santa came in on an L8 Grasshopper which later gave a flying display. They appear to have plenty of events on the go throughout the year so check web site for details. Museum cost... More

Booked online for two, easy enough process. Afternoon Tea here runs once a month. Received a confirmation email to print out and take with us. We went on a Sunday and everything was fine until the sat nav took us to an empty field. The postcode provided on the confirmation email list was for The Shuttleworth Collection, which we assumed... Visited on a whim knowing the cafe would be open and enjoyed an extremely interesting, if slightly cold (so wrap in the hangars) walk around all the exhibits, finishing after lunch with a visit to the workshop where a Spitfire is being rebuilt. Mid week and quiet but all the items, aircraft and cars, are fully described and within the... More

I visited the collection last week for the second time with some friends. It is an entrancing experience if you enjoy learning about the history of flight and looking at the aircraft involved. An amazing collection. I look forward to returning during one of the flying days next year to see them in action.

Well worth the effort. A great collection of aircraft from a bygone era and they still fly! Loved the "sticks and string" ones from the early days of flying.

We enjoyed the 6 hangers full of planes, motor vechicles and memorabilia. Bit chilly in the hangers. Lunch in the cafe good and the gardens worth a visit.
