Spread across 800 acres and a pair of hills Dr Graham's homes or DGH as it's is called is a mini township. Founded in 1900 the school is now a private residential school for students who come from Nepal India Bhutan Sri Lanka Tibet Sikkim and Burma to study. It has its own orchards, farms, dairy, bakery to sustain the daily kitchens. Around 2000 students are enrolled at any given time. The school takes in students from 6 months old if you are an orphan or your family cannot take care of you (you have to be an Anglo Indian to qualify as the school was set up for the betterment of the Anglo Indians). The school is till class 12 and has both science and commerce. It is beautiful and one can take walks across the school areas which has a chapel dating back to 1929 with original Staines glass windows shipped from Scotland. It has the romantic Scottish Woods and is also the gateway to the highest point of kalimpong the Deolo Hill. In the school one can get a breathtaking view of Mt. Kanchanzhongha from the Honeymoon Hill. A must visit.

I studied here for 9 years and maybe I am therefore emotional - but no visit to Kalimpong is complete without a visit to this school. Built in 1900 the structures still stand the test of time, albeit a little shaken up due to the recent earthquakes. The school comprises of its own bakery, farm, a beautiful chapel, the junior and senior schools, and cottages where the boarders stay. Spread across 400 odd acres the school has great views of the Kanchandzongha. A must visit

An educational institution started with 6 orphans in 1900 by Missionary Dr. John Anderson Graham. The School is on the slopes of Kalimpong Delo Hills, has sizable number boys and girls. They stay in small cottages. It has its own dairy, poultry and bakery.
Story is interesting and Dr Graham is still respected. If you have time you can visit, can be skipped otherwise. You will anyway get to see it on the way to Delo Hills.

This school was set up by Dr Graham, a Scottish missionary, for Anglo Indian children about 100 years ago. It is part boarding and part day, part fee paying and part charitable. We visited to see a girl we sponsor there and found the whole experience very moving. Try to attend a Sunday chapel service - the school has a wonderful Christian ethos and you would be made very welcome. This place does a great job in providing dedication for children who would otherwise have nothing.

I last visited Dr Graham's school 25 years ago when I was responsible for an aid program that (amongst other things) delivered 5 scholarships annually to the school. Since that time those scholarships have been discontinued and the school has suffered financial hardship due to natural disasters and maintenance costs. I was lucky enough to be invited to meet the Headmaster, an impressive man, and was heartened by the continuing level of commitment to much needed education in Kalimpong. Well done, this is first and foremost a school -not a tourist attraction.

The tour operators will take you this school as one of the attractions in the itinerary. This is purely a waste of time. there is nothing much to see in the place other than the old building which are not even maintained properly. The principles bungalow and the Church are the only places maintained well.

The Graham School has a huge premises. It is very clean. The school has a huge play ground. The school imparts great values in the children's life like protecting the environment by not using plastics n not littering the premises, maintaining silence, etc. The location of the school is lovely with a scenic beauty around which helps the students' n the teachers' minds fresh n cheerful.

The present school campus has a area of 400 acres( 1.61 Sq Km) and is considered a "Mini Town". It is self sufficient producing its own food, clothing and lodging. The school is affiliated to I.C.S.E and I.S C X11 Indian education system. I was just dazed at the sheer size of this educational institution, the largest i have seen in my life-time.Anglo-Indian children from Kolkota received free education. There is a small Anglican chapel on the school estate.

We viewed the school grounds from within the gates but outside the campus and were truly impressed. It is rare to find a school constructed within so much beauty, and I hope the students cherish their time in this special property. We passed by various sections outside, such as the hospital, playground, classes, and found something that is not seen in mainland india - employees / doctors / nurses / teachers actually working with dedication. Like most of north east india, cleanliness is top priority. My blessings and prayers with this school that holds a special image in my heart.

Why were there so many unwanted Anglo Indian children? Our church in Scotland used to send money there. It was pretty well known that these kids were the offspring of the British men and Indian women. Hmm! I guess in those days the men just left the poor women to deal with it!!
