Gaden Tharpa Choling Monastery is about a 30 minute fairly strenuous walk uphill from Damber Chowk in the centre, on a side road just off of K.D. Pradhan Rd, which starts near Damber Chowk.

K.D. Pradhan Rd is fairly steep, especially at the start. I would recommend walking up Rishi Rd from Damber Chowk for about 25 minutes, then turning left at the destined side road going uphill and backwards. Or walking up Rishi Rd 10 minutes to Tripai Rd, up the short Tripai Rd until it merges with K.D. Pradhan Rd, then walking another 15 or so mins until the monastery is nearly directly in front of you.

The place looks modest as you enter through a nice gate, but when you get to the main area, the walls by the front door are really beautifully decorated, and the inside is even more beautiful.

The location has a nice view of Kalimpong.

Finding the road leading to it was tricky. The interior is very intricately painted. There is garden full of different coloured flowers. The view of the Kalimpong city from here is enchanting.

A beautiful , tiny little monastery on a hilltop is all that you need for that picture perfect setting. I was told by the resident monks that this monastery was built by Domo Geshe Rinpoche Kalsang in 1912 at the request of Bhutanese and Tibetan leaders. The place is well maintained and very very peaceful!!

1) This monastery is near town but still very quaint and peaceful. We were blessed with the guidance from a resident monk who kindly took us inside and showed everything.
2) The prayer hall is not very big but with the same serene atmosphere and large paintings related to life of Buddha.
3) The major attraction is the museum located on campus and though compact, it houses many old scriptures and artefacts showing the visit of Dalai Lama to this monastery.
4) A must visit if you have the time and inclination.

Though small, this monastery is really very beautiful. Although near the city, the campus itself is very peaceful. Also, a small but lovely museum showing many Tibetan Buddhist pictures and much more is located in the campus.

All monastaries offer havens of peace. This one seems to hold a special serenity. We heard some older monks reading from ancient books...a privilege for us.
