Visited on 11.02.2023 early in the morning. To my surprise, not just sanctuary even the 20km car trip from the NH to bird sancturary was pleasant in the morning.
First you will like it, if you are bird lover or someone who wish to sit in silence and enjoy the nature. Before 9 not many visit and you can comfortably sit in the chairs and enjoy birding/nature.
If you are neither a bird watcher or someone who is coming in search of peace, it won't entertain you much, except few photo/selfie opportunities

A good sight seeing experience for people and children interested in bird watching.
Close to Chennai ,so easy for Chennaites.
Parking, tea shops with biscuits and cold drinks , binoculars ,paid rest rooms available
Place can be better maintained.
Make sure you visit the preview room for 10 to 15 min ,next to ticket counter before entering the sanctuary to make it a more meaningful experience .
You can spend one to one half hr there.
Apart from Lake side view, don't forget to watch to the other side on trees ,u can spot lot of rare species.( Binoculars must)
Make less noise as you walk.
Avoiding eats inside helps to maintain the sanctuary clean and does not attract monkeys which are common there ,though seem harmless.
The tower time is restricted, find out at the ticket counter.( Best view with guide and preadjusted binoculars)
Best to visit during November to March to see migratory birds.
8 am to 10.30 am is what we visited and really got see lot of species

Visited on 8 th June 2022 with parents and wife . We drove from Kanchipuram - about 42 km and took an hour. Road was just perfect throughout. Since it was a week day, not much crowded . Very well maintained park by Forest Department .
Parking is available. Well maintained toilets(pay Rs 5) . Well laid out internal walkways for about a km besides benches, sitouts, watch tower to view birds . One can rent binoculars to view birds closely . Do visit either morning hours from 6am to 8am or 4pm to 6pm for viewing more number of birds .
Good for family outing . Season is Oct to March when more than 40,000 birds are claimed to be viaiting but otherwise throughout the year viewing is possible

It was on my bucket list for a while and decided to visit on a Saturday early morning.
As summer is approaching, the last lap of fog and mist around the place invited me to the lush green with the mangrove background. I was lucky to witness the sun rise and the sounds of the birds was amazing. Some Alarm calls , few begging calls , contact calls , flight calls and some singing. I fully enjoyed and would recommend people arounf chennai to check this place before the birds go back to thier homes.

I had been to this sanctuary on Feb13 and I could see lot of migratory birds. The whole sanctaury is full of painted storks,Asian open bill storks,Darters,Pelicans,Coromorants,Gre herons, Blackheaded ibis, sandpipers etc.I observed a pair of cute owls on top of the tree. There is another sanctuary near to this called kalikiri bird sanctuary and you can see different varieties of ducks which are resting on top of tree.Overall this time both the sanctuaries are excellent

Nice place to visit with family where you can see different types of migratory birds. Last year during our visit the guide was very well in explaining. This year this has become too commercial and they have put extra 5 binoculars and there is a separate ticket to view using binoculars. The persons standing there don't know what type of birds they are showing. Only one binocular that is installed by government can be moved to see the full view, all others cannot be moved, what they show you have to view.
They need to put one more tower for the bird watchers with their own binoculars.

This is a treat for the senses whether you are a birder/twitcher or not. The number of birds in the reserve in the migration seasons must be in the tens of thousands. Many are residents all year round, but the painted storks and pelicans are the main attractions. They are close enough for their size to be experienced but out in their own water and trees ensuring appropriate separation from human interference. The on-going maintenance of the site means it is easy to move around and the several observation points make photography a joy. Our favourite is the Snake or Dart bird with its genetic ability to literally dart at the fish it eats. Its elegant stretching and preening is a sight to see. Only downside is the playing of loud pop music. While being hypnotised by the birds and bats across the water, take time to glance behind at the farmland where many smaller birds can be spotted. There are many helpful information signs on site as well as toilets and refreshments immediately outside as well as somewhere to hire binoculars if you have forgotten your own.

Lots of egret and cormorants but not much else to see without looking closer. A careful quiet look reveals away from the tour parties is well worth the effort. This approach yielded a good list of mammals, reptiles and stalling birds. Tip go alone or with people who appreciate that wildlife is disturbed by chatter.
