I've wanted to visit the Puri Jagannath Temple for a long time and finally traveled all the way from Hyderabad. Today, I had the chance to do darshan at this temple, which is one of the four Char Dham temples in India. The Char Dham are four sacred sites that hold immense spiritual significance in Hinduism.

Even though we went at around 10 PM, the temple was extremely crowded. People were pushing and shoving as they tried to get inside, and it felt almost like a stampede. There were no proper lines or organization inside the temple, making it difficult to move around and pray peacefully. The entire darshan process took about an hour, but we could only stay inside for about 5-10 minutes due to the huge crowd.

Despite these challenges, the darshan was amazing. The idol of Lord Jagannath looked so peaceful and unique. Even with all the hurdles, we felt happy and fulfilled after coming out of the temple. However, better crowd management and proper lines would enhance the experience, allowing devotees to pray in peace after traveling long distances.

I visited the Jagannath Temple, Puri a Year ago. As I am from Odisha. It is a pure beauty for me. Every time I visited Puri, I always kept a heartful respect for Jagganath Prabhu. My hero, my god.

A note for travellers Please avoid to go temple after 11 AM as it is usually crowded. And also avoid taking mahaprasad out of the temple. Remember there is a shoe stand and mobile, shoe stand to submit all the gadgets inside the temple arena for free. It is not allowed to carry mobile, Belt or any type of electronic gadgets. Always remember to wear an ethenic dress when you visit the temple.

The only good thing about the visit was the Seeing the Idols of the Lord. Every time looking at those eyes of Lord Jagannath is surreal.
But every good thing ends here.

There was a huge rush of crowd inside the temple and absolutely NO Queue management. It was a Sunday, so crowd will be high, but it is all the more reason to manage the crowd. Someone from the crowd pinched me really hard and I was being pushed and pulled all along. I was shouted at for not moving, but how could i move in the crowd. My Mothers Churni got stuck in the wooden barriers in front of a priest and she was being pushed and pulled to go ahead, but the priest sat there without a single care!!!!

Devotion and all piousness was completely gone at that time. People were on the verge of hitting each other just to get a darshan. It was not a stampede, but an almost stampede.

I am not sure how devotion will remain after facing such a situation.

Please go on weekdays, you might see less crowd. And stay away from the Pandas, they don’t care about anyone, not even the Lord.

I am from Odisha, and this has become very common nowadays. There was a time when this temple was peaceful. But today it is not at all like that.

There were a few non-Odias and they were like, we weren’t even able to see the Lord properly despite coming twice.

I had memories of a great temple but surrounded by filth. I was simply amazed how the surroundings of the temple have been spruced up, with a great walk-path

This Hindu Temple is dedicated to a form of Vishnu, Lord Jagannath. Non-Hindus (excluding Jains, Sikhs, Buddhists) are not allowed to enter, but these religious exceptions don’t apply to foreigners, which makes no sense. If you’re not allowed in, then the best place to view the roofs and shikhara is from the west and north sides. There’s no platform specially for viewing, so best to get onto a rooftop somewhere. To be honest, I wouldn’t bother visiting unless you’re allowed in.

Serious safety incident

Terrible experience. Puri temple is worst place to visit. Particularly with girl child. I am overweight person , so i get knee pain on standing for long time.Temple is overcrowed . One person wearing saffron cloth aged around 60 plus came and told, he will take us to dharshan and asked for Rs. 500. We agreed. He took us inside the temple bypassing all crowd. In middle of the crowd. He suddenly behaved very rude and took my daughter's hand and started running. I got scared this act. My devotion to God disappeared and my attention is only on my daughter from being kidnapped by that person. When we came out he forced us to pay rs. 2100 for temple annadhanam. Took rs 1000 as his charge. When this incident happened inside the temple, there is lots of chances for child trafficking. Govt should take this account. For me, it is very surprising to see indiscipline inside the temple. As a tourist new to the place, no cellphone in hand (as cell phone is not allowed) if you want to file complaint also it will take time(crucial period will get lost). Please do not take children to this temple. This is not safe. Beware before going.

Worst experience and worst behaviour by the Priests of temple. Any filthy language for them is less. Such a beautiful devotional place where people visit for devotion and peace has been converted into a place filled with greed, anger, chaos. They are no less than vultures. They are the shameful blot on the beauty of Puri. They need to be eradicated removed so that people feel safe and peaceful when going for the Lords Darshan.

As a kid I had visited Puri dham several times, also attended 'Nabakalaber' years back, but this time, after more than 40 years, things have gotten worse.

Sanctity of the temple premises, unique architecture of the sanctum sanctorum, faith and belief in Lord Jagganath, the delicious Mahaprasadam, the devotees, and the divine darshan, all remain in pious state, what has gotten worse is the crowd management, 'payment' for a quicker darshan, behaviour of the pandas towards devotees, condition of Sr. Citizens, women and children in the mad rush at darshan, expectations of pandas for offering at each and every imaginable religious spot, security turning a blind eye to devotees with (payment made to) pandas, pandas carrying mobiles whereas general devotees denied for the same and the total time in hours for darshan!!

I hope temple management takes a note and makes improvements for darshan otherwise Puri dham will also become a commercial commonplace like some other known temples.
