3 to 4 hours journey and costed 4200. It is boring to travel by boat for few hours to see just glimpse of Dolphin.
If you go, carry water bottle, snacks to enjoy in the boat.
Red crab island - someone just come and show to 2 - 3 crab in basket. He will show you many precious stones - we did not purchased any. It seems fake as per many you tube/other reviews
Overall, not worth to spend one day and 4 K

Satapada is famous for dolphins. But with blink of eyes the dolphin(s) appears. This is because a lot of tourists come here and went inside chilika with hired boats, which make very loud noise. When so many such boats comes to one place then obviously the dolphins may get scared. Whereever, a glimpse of dolphin seen, all the boats rush towards there. But if you don’t spot dolphins then many birds are here who will follow you if you drop foods for them. The specific food is available near the boat point. If you really want to spot dolphins then better to go during off season.

First, the charges are very high. Secpondly, visibilitty of Dolpins, Red crabs, etc are just fake story. Many visitors had worst experience. Nothing can be seen here. Actuallyt in two and half hours boating we did not see any thing. Its a vicisous circle of people who lie and just show 2 to 3 red crabs in a basket. Then there comes a person explaining how pearls, hawla and some precious stone. extracts perlas, hawla etc. from the shells, and selling at high price, Its all fake. Unnecessary our time and money is wasted. Government must immediately intervene and stop the running of boats by private boat association.

Lake is beautiful but be careful about pearl selling place.
It's my personal experience .If you select private boat from entry point first they will take to Dolphin point and next they will take to one island where local people will be seen with full of sea shelfs.Later they start explaining how pearl will be generated and show you the demo also
By seeing that one will be mesmerized and show interest in buying. They will say cost of one pearl is 600 to 1000 where as original price of such low quality pearl is 50 Rs.
I have never seen such big scam .Attaching video for your reference.I don't know why Odisha Government has not taken any actions on that...

I went to Puri for a short vacation from 21.10.16 to 24.10.16 with my family. We were three. On 23.10.16 we took a car to visit Chilka lake, dolphin point etc. We started from our Hotel at Puri around 9:30 AM. It is a 2 hrs drive to reach a boating point called Mirzapur. There are nine such boating points I was told.
Govt. has made a counter for buying ticket for boating at the ferry point. This spares tourists from haggling / bargaining with boat men. There are various rates and time. We took 3 ½ Hrs ride for Rs. 3000/- covering red crab island, dolphin point, sea mouth etc. Nothing so exciting about red crab island. One has to careful about bogus stone sellers there. Dolphin point is good. If you can reach early morning you can see more dolphins. We saw 1 or 2 jumping out of the water. To my horror I found boats trying to go near them. It clearly stated in Notice board that if you see a dolphin you switch off your boat & do not disturb. It seems some awareness / training of the boat drivers is needed. A mere Notice Board is not enough. Sea mouth is a nice spot. Again to my horror I found there are number of stalls / shops in a beautiful place like this, polluting the area. I feel Govt. should immediately ban all those shops. It took us about 4 hrs to complete the journey and we were back to the Ferry point by about 3:30 PM.

We hired a boat for 5-6 hours and visited the Chilika lake. First and foremost is Dolphins Watch. If you are lucky then you can easily see full dolphins in group in that lake else only head or tail or 3-4 dolphins. Must visit the other side of lake near to sea to enjoy sea foods.

I read that over 4000 different species of birds migrate to this lake every year but it was so disappointing to see very few birds whereas I expected a flock especially flamingoes. I wonder if it has something to do with climate change and pollution

This is a beautiful place full of natural beauty. You can spot many varieties of migratory birds and dolphins. Chilka lake is famous in the world and is biggest in the world. Local Tourism needs to be developed at this place by the Govt. No tourist friendly facility is available at this place. You need to hire local boats which are in bad condition without any safety measures they charge Rs3000/- for taking you to island. Nothing great at this island also. You can sit and enjoy local non-veg food and maximum can have fresh coconut water. Be carefull of local hawkers selling pearls and sea-shells. They will try to convince you by saying and showing you original shells containing pearls. But nothing is original so don't get cheated. Enjoy the natural beauty of this place and if you are lucky you can spot Dolphins. Do carry your hats/caps, drinking water, dry snacks and binoculars.

I want to stay at chilika lake in jan-2017 7th, what are the options and which is the best mode of transport from bhubneshwar to satpada
Written 13 September 2016
i will not advise staying at the lake. it would be safer and better to stay at Puri and take a full day cab to lake . it is advisable to reach early by 11am and spend ample time in the lake. The 5 hr tour to the sea mouth and adequate time to wait for the dolphins.you might be lucky if u sight a dolphin.

I am planning to visit Chilika last week of January. Please share how I can plan my day to enjoy Wildlife Sanctuary/Dolphins.
Written 15 January 2016
Best time during the day would be early morning and evenings. The Season is good during this month. Satpada end of the chilka lake avoid private tourist buses or transport option go through OTDC it is slight expensive but authentic guidance. If you take private tourist buses have a written commitment from regarding your seat number and amount etc They do not stick to their commitments and often make fools of the people's ignorance and who are no tin a position to fight and demand what was committed to be given.
