- Rajesh WBengaluru, India36 contributionsfantastic experienceThis place is all about patachitra paintings. Never ever i was involved in such kind of visit , this is the first time that i visited an arts village and it was truly a fantastic experience. the village is nestled in small village and is near to Bhubaneshwar. if you visit Puri then this is on the way to Puri from Bhubaneshwar. we took cab to visit this place and cab driver was having contacts in that villages so they directly came to us on arriving to the village and took us to their own workshop/shop. they showed us all the collections which costed from 30 /- rs to 1,50,000/- rs. most of the paintings are on Lord Krishna and few on Lord Sriram, Ganesha, Jaganath. we loved every paintings they showed and were tempted to buy and indeed spent 16k to buy single painting as a souvenir. i only visited one shop and never felt i should visit another neighbor or shop for better bargaining or paintings. This is a must visit place for tourists.Visited April 2024Travelled with familyWritten 13 April 2024
- North StarAhmedabad, India6 contributionsSpell bound !A small village, Narrow lanes, Simple houses. From a distance it appeared like any village of East India. Lush green foliage and many small water bodies! We entered only one home. Spell bound and mesmerized with the creativity of natural colors on cotton cloth bound with local material to become the base : canvas, and on it our religious figures and stories so beautifully painted. Each work had detailing, intricacies captured leaving us spell bound. A great salute, to the tradition and legacy, the artistic and creative skills !Visited August 2024Travelled with familyWritten 27 August 2024
- RS5 contributionsA "must see" generational Odissa art form and artisans at work.Would highly recommend a visit to this historical town, an art lover's dream. This talent needs to be highly appreciated, given the intricate and painstaking artwork done by the artists of this village in Odissa. It is commendable that they are passing on this amazing and unique knowledge of eco friendly art form to the next generation of artisans. They share the profits of any sale among all artists in the village, to help foster teamwork among artisans of this village.Visited December 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 13 January 2025

This visit was one of the highlights of my trip to Odisha. Every home is living, breathing, invaluable Art in itself. These people are so talented and they have done well to preserve their traditional art forms.
Road to here is not in great condition for the last 10kms or so. Must be more approachable. The shops starts showing well in advance while the actual village is 10kms away still. You will be thronged with people as soon as you reach asking you to visit their home where they create and display their art. Each one will tell you how no one comes into their house. Thankfully, they don't hound you after you politely decline to purchase. They really do want to share their art mainly. You would find a lot of similar looking stuff as well as some unique and exclusive articles. Products starts from hundred rs for a small hanging and goes very high for something exclusive.
What amazes me is that they live in these small houses and haven't made a fortune with their skills and creativity. Somebody should do something to make sure their art reaches the global market and improves their lifestyle.

Good place to visit for art lovers. We got a demonstration of how the painting was done on palm leaves and other materials. Prices of the paintings are steep. We bought a painting of Ganpati @1600 after bargaining from Rs.3300.

Raghurajpur Artist Village is a heritage village about 20 minutes drive from Pipli. The village is renowned for its unique Pattachitra art, a traditional style of painting that involves intricate detailing, vibrant colors, and mythological narratives. The Pattachitra art form primarily depicts stories from Hindu epics like the Ramayana, Mahabharata, and Puranas. The artists use natural dyes and pigments to create these exquisite paintings on pieces of cloth, known as 'Patta' in the local language.

Recently visited Raghurajpur and had a fantastic time. It's a very small handicraft village near Puri, but packed with culture. Highlights include Pattachitra and stone work. We got a demonstration of how Pattachitras are painted and it was amazing. We also purchased a few gorgeous handicrafts. The local artisans are very friendly, welcoming and truly talented, they will tell you all about their work and the process they follow. Highly recommend, especially if you're in Puri/Konark/Bhubaneswar as it's just a stones throw away from all these places and easily accessible from the highway.

This place is a must visit on the way to Puri from Bhubaneshwar. It is a small village around 10-15 mins drive from the more popular Pipli village which is famous for applique work. It is the place famous for patta chitra, which is actually sketches done on palm leaves and also, cloth. They use all natural colours and the designs are very intricate and beautiful. Even the walls of the small houses are painted beautifully with images of birds, animals, mythological characters and deities. They have schools that teach these drawings and you can visit and see the students practicing. You can buy the paintings (they come in all sizes) and even bookmarks and small wooden toys.

It is an awesome place to visit if you want to really deep dive into culture of Odisha. You will different styles of painting, dance and singing. There are many things you can buy here if you're art lover. And there aren't any shops in the village, people make artifacts at there home and display them in home itself. Make sure you have water with you, as village doesn't have any shop to buy purified water.

Even if you don't understand "art" as I don't, this is a must visit place. Every home in this village is an art studio, and every family member in each household is an artist. And what fabulous works of art! Even an art-blind person like me was fascinated.

We were coming back from Sun Temple and on the way back we visited this village, so it was already very dark, but the artists are truly great, the pattachitra work is indeed beautiful, the exterior walls of houses are itself so beautiful...
Paintings on the supari( arecanut), coconut, and many artefacts were available.. Though the prices are steep...but the work is fabulous...

Excellent art, explained with passion. Good knowledge gained regarding ancient painting techniques and relation with Lord Jagannath. Creative art and unique techniques.
The town need better display and upkeep to attract tourists and art lovers. Such an important village in terms of art but completely neglected by local government in terms of approach road, cleaning, sanitation etc.

Can you confirm the price of these paintings?
Written 3 March 2020
Painting is an art. How you look at it, and like it, will be base for price. Ask the Shop owner price if interested in buying and start negotiations from 25/30% of quote and amicably reach to price acceptable to both.

Hi, I am also looking at going and learning art and spending some time there. Would you by any chance know who to contact regarding this? Do the villagers take on students to learn from? Where did the foreigner that you interacted with, stay? Any guidance would be greatly helpful to start looking!

Well if you are that keen... arrange your stay at puri (which is a nearby town). Visit this place couple of times (don’t say anyone your purpose of visit) and see where things lead. In the entrance of the village you will see some of the shops... don’t stop their... go little further to the heart of the village... their you will see people working on their art in every house.. talk to them in their house... and you may find some luck... also check out Shantiniketan, visva Bharti university specially for fine arts , in West Bengal

are the pearls and corals etc. sold near chilka lake real?
Written 5 January 2017
can you suggest some offbeat places to visit near bhubneshwere and Cuttak.
Written 2 January 2017
Certainly there are plenty of options lying between Bhubaneswar and cuttak, but all offbeat places have become tourist attraction by now! Hats off to our poulation outburst...Still you may try staying at Konark beachside instead of Puri or other popular beaches where you can get some kind of "off beat" feelings. Bhitarkanika National park and Chandipur near Balasore may also be visited for the same reason. Always Keep in mind offbeat places comes with serenity and risks as well. Please do calculate all aspects before hand. All facilities may not be available on so called offbeat places.

There should be websites who sells artifacts online, but it is advisable to collect them on spot. Great Bargains , tailor made designs and choice of variety are main benefits from on spot purchases , it is a different experience altogether.
If you ever make visit to these places you may collect one of them as a memento else variety of similar artifacts and artist village are available in other places as well.
