This is one place I always visit, whenever I am in Puri,Odisha.

Location : Just behind the Lord Jagannath Main Temple, inside the Jagannath Temple Complex

Deity : Lord Kanchi Ganesh ( A black stone Ganesha idol with a bit of history for itself)

Lot of devotees visit this temple throughout the day and the evening and there is a Land line phone in this temple as well !

The Sri Kanchi Ganesh Temple is a must see for all Hindus, inside the Sri Jagannath Temple Complex. It is situated just behind the Sri Jagannath temple, and there is a story behind its particular location.

There was once apparently a big fight between the Raja of Puri and the Raja of Kanchi. The Ganesh was the presiding deity of Kanchi and Lord Jagannath was the presiding deity of Puri at that time. So these two apparently had an altercation amongst themselves and finally had a bet. Whoever lost the fight would be at the other's place, sitting right behind the victor. Lord Jagannath won the battle and Kanchi's Ganesh was forced to come down to Puri and permanently sit behind The Lord .

The temple is a small one with iron bars around it to weed away monkeys. The Ganesh idol is made from black sandstone probably . You can offer your Pujas here daily.

The Kanchi Ganesh Temple is dedicated to Uchhista Ganapati. Tradition says the King of Kanchipuram in ancient times gifted the idol, when Gajapati Purushottama Deva married Padmavati, the kanchi princess. The ekadanta form of Ganesa signifies the readiness for Sacrifice to complete any accepted task (like how he himself broke away his tusk to complete the writing of Mahabaratha being dictated to him by Sri Veda Vyasa).

There would be no photographs possible, as much as I would like to upload one for the benefit of fellow travelers - at least till the time no photography rules stand within the Jagannath Temple Complex. Perhaps the policemen guarding the temple from inside can upload one - only they are allowed their smartphone, I saw a couple of them using them.

This temple is situated very near to the West side exit of the Jagannath Temple. This Ganesha is also known as the following:
1. Tantric Ganesha
2. Uchista Ganesha
3. Bhanda Ganesha
4. Kamada Ganesha
The legend is as follows:
This legend is immortalized in the Kanchi-Kaveri Upakhyan
King Purushottama Deva (reign: 1466-97 AD) of the Gajapati Kingdom of Orisssa invaded King Narasimha Raya II of the Saluva Dynasty of the Viajayanagara Empire. This war was started because of the slight made by the king Narasimha. The legend goes by - King Purushottama Deva was defeated in the war in the first attempt. He came back as a broken man and prayed to lord Jagannatha. According to the legend, Lord Jagannatha promised support and fought in the second part of the war along with his brother Balabhadra. Lord Ganesha was fighting also in the war on behalf of the ruler of Kanchi King Narasimha Raya. When Lord Jagannatha assumed the form of a big cat, Lord Ganesha's Rat fled. Lord Ganesha realized that Lord Jagannatha was fighting on behalf of Kind Purushottama. He apologized to lord Jagannatha and withdrew from war. This resulted in the victory of King Purushottama, and he captured King Narasimha Raya II and his daughter Padmavati (also known as Rupambika). He then ordered Padmavati to be married off to a perfect sweeper. Gajapati kings were known as Routa or Routacharyas - which means servant of Lord Jagannatha. On he occasion of the next Ratha Yatra, when King Purushottama was sweeping the chariot of lord Jagannath, the clever minister declared him to be perfect sweeper and thus Padmavati was married to king Purushottama. Idol of Kanchi Ganesha was brought from the Vijayanagara to Puri and was established here.

The specialty of the idol is a woman sitting on Ganesha's left thigh, and the trunk of the Ganesha is near the vulvar region of the woman. Vulva(Yoni) is a Tantric Symbol of origin and creation. Hence, Tantric Ganesha

The earlier reviews are not completely true . The war and bringing it back to puri is true . The reason as to why The King of puri carried it back lies in uncovering the whole statue . I had the oppurtunity to view the whole statue . Once you view it you will know that it was really a mystery as to why Ganesha was represented that way . A typical "Kamasutra way " . This made the king more confused . So to know the details , he thought carrying it back to puri so that his court pundits and scholars can study it more thoroughly .

By the way this form of Ganesh is not to be seen anywhere in India . So don't miss it.
