Though there is Entry at all other major tourist spot but this is way to higher. Entering in water is not allowed here but you can get yourself clicked. We also tried the Local Khasi Costume near the Exit which was really good. Shops are good at the exit.Visited January 2024Travelled with familyWritten 2 March 2024

I have visited waterfalls in Bali Ubud and this waterfall was equal to or better than waterfalls witnessed there. Must visit.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 29 March 2024

When you reach the place you can see a number of souvenir shops, small restaurants and a gate with a flight of stairs going down towards the falls. There is ample parking space beside these shops. There is also a pretty tree canopied park behind the parking area which also has a kids play area. We started our descent towards the falls following the steps leading down after buying the entry ticket of Rs 100/per person.
There was a shop at the starting of the stairs which was providing Khasi costumes for tourists who wanted to get themselves clicked in the traditional dress. The fall is not named after the shape of an elephant as one might think, but it is named after an elephant shaped rock discovered here at the base of the waterfall at the last level, which was later destroyed by the 1897 earthquake. The original Khasi name of the waterfall is Ka Kshaid Lai Pateng Khohsiew, which translates to "the three - step waterfall".
As the name suggests this waterfall has 3 different levels and each level has a different beauty. The third and last level is the most pretty one. We visited on the last day of October and still the falls had good amount of water. I could only imagine how much more prettier it would look during the monsoon. While the first level of the falls can be easily reached by going down about 20-25 steps, the second and the third levels are much more difficult to navigate as the steps are tall and steep. Its almost 100 more steps down to the final level after the first level. It is advisable that people with mobility issues should not go down all three levels because while coming back it would be very taxing. Litter bins are available all over the trail so make sure you are not unnecessarily littering the place.
When you reach the base of the falls it ends in a small pool of water. There is a boating facility available and if you wish you can take a ride for an additional cost. Please note you cannot enjoy a dip in this pool, only boating is allowed.

There are a total of 3 falls at 3 different levels and there are steps to go down to them.People with limited mobility can have trouble accessing the falls. The best time to visit the falls would be during monsoon as when we visited it in Jan there was hardly any flow. There is ample parking at the place and few shops to selling water, snacks & some souvenirs. There is an entry fee of Rs100 per head which we thought was a bit pricey. The entire complex is very clean and well kept with dustbins around and also had public toilets.

Named after a elephant like rock at its base , the elephant falls are the most popular water falls of north east located next to Shillong.
The tourist paradise with 3 layer of water falls is accessible from different view points. The first wide fall is hidden behind dense trees , the second one is thin with turbulence & third one very wide clearly visible flows like a thin milky sheet is simply mesmerising.
The elephant shaped stones wash away with time & also got disintegrated due to earth quake.
Awesome place to spend time with family and friends.

We had been in the month of march…entry fee was ₹50 per person. You need to climb down the stairs to reach the falls. Since it was summer there was no water at all. It was not worth paying ₹50. So I don’t recommend visiting this place in summer.

Locally known as Ka Kshaid Lai Pateng Khohsiew and renamed by British as Elephant falls because there used to be a rock resembling an elephant near the falls which was destroyed in an earthquake back in 1897 but the name stayed.
The difficulty to reach this falls is easy. There are stairs which will take you down to the falls. Please note that its a bit steep. The falls itself is small and there is a small paddle boat right in front of the falls which you can use by paying a small amount and spend some time.
Sometimes it gets crowded and this is when you can visit the park right opposite to the falls. The name of the park is Mattilang Amusement Park. There is nice parking here and you need to get a ticket to entry . The view of elephant falls from here is stunning. Also, lot of play area for kids.
Overall a good waterfalls and nice place to experience.

Recently we visited Elephant Falls and i had a worst experience visiting this place. Me and my family members decided to visit the place as it was recommended to us that it's worth visiting this water falls in Shillong. I was surprised that the entry fees for this water falls is Rs. 100 each. We were four members visited this waterfalls and we ended up paying Rs.400/-, which is way to high. I believe if we visit Niagra falls, the entry fees would not be that high. Not recommending to visit this place at all.

Elephant falls is located at a distance of 12 km from the Shillong city, in Upper Shillong, Meghalaya. It is one the most scenic and famous waterfall in Northeast India. Elephant falls is a popular tourist attraction in Shillong and it is a combination of three (3) rivers.

Visited on Oct 1st . Water fall had very nice waterflow . From the parking 1st fall is few steps away and can be reached easily . From there it's bit of a walk to fall 2 & 3 but can be managed. Fall three is the most beautiful. Entry fee of Rs 100/- per head is very high .

A little touristy with shacks close to the falls. But overall a neat and clean place. Since it was raining a lot in Meghalaya we enjoyed these waterfalls. Waterfalls can be seen in three steps..first the very top, second the midpart and third the last part which one has to climb down more steps. You can also have a quick Maggie which is a staple snack all over Meghalaya. We bought some souvenirs which were a little expensive but bought some good stuff.

Coming to shillong with 5 and 12 yr old girls for 2 days,is it worth visiting elephant falls, will there be water, what r must see places
Written 15 February 2020
I would not expect water from the falls, at this time of the year. Since you are with kids and going for a short visit, it may not be worth the trouble, as there is sufficient climbing up and down involved too, at the falls.
Nevertheless, the ambience is good, and the surrounding is a pleasant drive.

We are planing to go in November. Is it a good time? How many days trip is required to cover the spots?
Written 19 August 2019
A single day trip if you start early is sufficient. Next day go for cherapunjee for a day trip. Third day can be off route trip to the clean lake

Can we have our lunch there ??? Is there a place to sit to rest?
Written 17 November 2018
Yes there is ample space on the way to the falls and near the falls as well. But its better to have your food near the market area. As the fall area should remain clean.
Written 26 November 2018
yes it will raining due to monsoons..so good time..full water flow in all waterfalls

elephant fall can be access by aged pepole? how much walking time it will need to get to the fall.
Written 15 March 2018
Yes, Elephant Falls can be accessed by the aged people too. I, an almost Senior Citizen accessed the spot last year with not much trouble and I found many other Senior Citizens there enjoying the beauty of nature sitting on a bench like spot. I remember from our car parking it was hardly a matter of two to three minutes to start walking downwards for another five minutes. But one must be careful while going downwards or returning upwards, as needed in a hilly area. But believe me, it it not that tough for the aged people to access the spot.
Had it been Living route bridge (Singe or Double Decker ) I would surely discourage you.
Enjoy...

June would be very good,in my opinion. Shillong & Cherrapunjee are famous and visitworthy for rain. In june, you can enjoy the beauty of rain to the fullest. The famous falls will be full of water, be it in Shillong(Elephant)or Cherrapunjee(Seven sisters & Nakalikai) for which tourists from all over the world come to these places. One small thing, I would like to add that one should stay beside Barapani(Umium)Lake in stead of Shillong town, particularly in lake facing rooms of Orchid Lake Resort of Meghalaya Tourism. Bon voyage and enjoy

To start with all tuorists are different in their own way.. likes, dislikes, purpose of trip varies.. I have seen couple with a toddler in back pack in ladakh confidently moving around while some couple who hesitate to travel to a relatives place 5 hours from home with a small child... So you need to decide what you want from the trip... Tawang is a must watch but then you are travelling completely on the opposite side of Meghalaya... Dawki and Cherrapunjee are nice place.. Shillong is just another over crowded hill station, with heavy traffic everywhere but travel.... You may add a off beat location called Laitlum grand canyon near the Shillong. Finally traveling on the road for all the 10 days may be hectic for the kids, so you need to consider the trip plan with due consideration of the constraints

can we see water in April may?
is it worth visiting at that time
Written 25 November 2017
Obviously It should be better to visit Elephant Falls right after rainy season. But, you can visit the falls during Apr-May too, since the Falls is equally active before, after and during rainy season.
