This remarkable one-room display of pinned butterflies, rhinoceros beetles and stick insects is located in the home of the original collector. It's said to be the only museum in India exclusively devoted to moths, butterflies and insects. A taxi to the museum from Police Bazaar costs ₹100.HOURS 11am-4pm Mon-Sat

This is unadvertised and unsigned. You get the third degree at the door. This is not a live exhibit. It is butterflies pinned to a cushion and covered in glass. I suppose an entymologist would have some appreciation, but for the amateur it is a disappointment. The explanatory material is minimal.

Outstanding collection of huge species of moths, butterflies, beetles, centipedes, millipedes and tarantula have been showcased by Mrs. Wankhar, daughter of bengali entomologist Dr. S. Sarkar who passionately started the ponderous job to collect the specimens from various parts of different countries. Vibrant glittering hue of fluttering wings of butterflies, unmatched size of the centipedes, rare glimpse of well preserved... More

A privately-owned museum of M/s Wankhar, Riatsamthiah, Shillong at a distance of about 2km from Police Bazar is the only known museum in India devoted to moths and butterflies.

Entomology is the scientific study of insects, a branch of zoology. MR. Siddhartha Kumar Sarkar, a bengali entomologist from Kolkata went to Shillong and married a Khasi lady with surname Wankhar. They took initiative to collect various species of insects and butterflies. Mr. Sarkar sent his son to different country to take training on entomology and preservation of insects. After... More

Its a private collection which is maintained by the 3rd generation of the Wankhars. Has a good collection of butterflies, beetles, moths, other insects displayed here. A nice walk of ten minutes from Police Bazaar can get you there. However, there can be some improvement in the quality of visit. ID and naming is required for a lot of specimens.... More

This amazing private collection is not on the 5 or 7 point trap of packaged tourists , so expect a degree of peace and calm . The collection is in the hands of the third generation and they are certainly not adding to the collection let alone '' breeding and conservation '' touted by many hopelessly outdated tourist pamphlets ....
