1.Jatashankar (also Jata Shankar) is a natural cave and Hindu shrine
2. They have stone from Ramsetu
3.According to regional tradition, the Jatashankar caves are considered to be sacred due to their identification with the spot where Shiva is said to have concealed himself from the wrath of Bhasmasura.
4.It is also thought to be where Lord Shiva performed his cosmic dance of Tandav.
5.You can only visit here with Gypsy or with personal vechicle. It is ghat area and if you are not expert don’t go by personal vehicle.
6.Network is also not strong, hence download the map before going.
7.Good adventures & religious place with unique beauty.
8.The Shivling is situated in the cave and our feet touch the running water.
9.There are many bathing pools at this place.
10.Jatashankar Temple is believed to be more than 5,000 years old and was built during the Gupta period.
11.The main idol of Lord Shiva inside the temple is made of black marble, giving it a unique and exquisite appearance.

First up - To get down to the Jatashankar Cave, you have to climb first up & then down a lot of stairs. From the parking to the stairs is a fairly long walk too. The elderly may need assistance.
But, once you're here, it's a different experience to wade into cold, gushing water to glimpse at the idol. It's actually quite thrilling even if you're a non-believer. A tiny part of me kept thinking if there could be snakes in the water, I was largely absolutely thrilled to experience this unique temple.
On the way to the main temple, there are numerous other temples & statues. In one of the temples, you can also see a floating stone. Moreover, you're deep in a gorge with prehistoric hills rising on both sides. And the greenery was spellbinding.

A temple built in the lap of nature. The Shivling is situated in the cave and our feet touch the running water. We visited in the monsoon month so the water was very clean and ample. Only issue is that we have to travel about one kilometer from parking and climb down approx 150 stairs.
A must visit temple to feel the spiritual power of Lord Shiva.

A very good visit. Recommended to take a guide. We had gone in a group, and hired a guide for 100/-. They show you things you couldn't have seen at you own. Place's history, geography was well explained. Totally worth a visit

Jata Shankar
It was the last day of our stay in Pachmarhi, the day three. So we woke up early, packed up all the personal effects scattered in the hotel room and decided to visit the sacred cave of Jatashankar. It was at a walking distance from our hotel. The walk up to the cave was quite captivating as we passed through the low lying hills perfect for the rock climbing on both side of the road. Although Jata Shankar cave is in the midst of the huge fallen boulders but the approach has proper steps leading down to the sacred cave. There is Shiva engraved in purple on a rock. There is Lord Hanuman on the other side as well. The Jatashankar cave is naturally cool and also has a stream passing through at the bottom. Believe it or not, inside the cave we saw a naturally formed Sheshnaag (snake hood) and also a crocodile shaped stone formation. We offered our prayers and came out to visit other parts of the Jatashankar. The place is on a descend divided by two huge rocks on the left and right and when one looks up, you experience a cinematic effect of the sky view with sun rays making their way to the base of the caves. One of the rock’s high sides had about eight beehives. There is another narrow cave passing through Lord Hanuman’s temple which houses a life size idol of Bajrangbali. One of the interesting things we saw and experienced were the floating stones. We were informed by the priest that these are the same stone which were used to construct the floating bridge to reach Ravana’s Lanka. I picked the stones in my hand to see how they feel. I must say that they were real stones but with floating properties, another charisma of the nature! I must say that Jatashankar is a marvelous place and a must visit for all the devotees and travelers. By this hour, it was time for breakfast so we proceeded to savor the Idli and Dosa at a nearby restaurant. With this, our excursion ended at a good note etched with life- long memories of Pachmarhi in our heart, soul and mind. While going back to Pipariya to catch our train, we stopped by at Denva river view point. It was a fantastic sight as the river was running almost 100 meters steep down. Monkeys were in abundance here as well. After this final sight, we boarded the Jabalpur superfast express train at 2020 hrs and reached New Delhi at 1110 hrs the next day.
Overall it was a stimulating, interesting, invigorating and rejuvenating trip! Pachmarhi has everything on offer for everyone on a leisure trip. I would call it an all-in-one destination where one can enjoy the Nature, River, Lakes, Falls, Museums, Jungles, Mountains, Caves, Religious fervor, Sunset, Sunrise, Jungle safari, Trekking, adventure sports like Rock climbing, Paragliding etc. It is advisable to carry a back-pack full of liquids, light snacks and a first aid kit as there is dearth of shops and food joints almost at all the attractions. As the place is measly inhabited, there are very limited options for shoppers and good restaurants. Majority of the shops shut in the afternoon for few hours and also down shutters early in the evening. Moreover, the place is an Army cantonment area so strict rule and regulations prohibits mushrooming of vendors and shops here and there. In fact that is the reason Pachmarhi has retained its nature’s element in original condition and superior health; which is good considering the fact that the tentacles of commercialization are fast spreading contagiously, the world over. I am immensely happy that Pachmarhi remains Pachmarhi, unfazed & unaffected!
Loved Pachmarhi (MP Gazab hai-MP is amazing TV ad has lived up to its promise)

One can witness ecosystem at work out here with mountains feeding the streams with fresh water, the water that they soak-in during autumn. As the name suggests, these caves and many others like these are abode of lord Siva.

A very beautiful feeling when you enter the cave and close your eyes. Appreciate the marvels that nature creates - Sedimentary rocks with layers of sediments, a piece of rock held between two ridges and a pool of water underneath.

Its just 10 mins from main bus stand. Even at walkable distance. Take a walk from the outside as you can see a lot of rock formations on the way. There are a lot of tribal people selling herbal medicines and various oils and honey.
I did buy garlic oil and boy does it work. Couldn't find any proof their claims on the internet but the quality of the stuff looked good. The caves are also good trek.

Don't go with the name cave as its very small. But the temperature there is very cold and as you have to go bare feet there, it feels quite nice if you have walked very much that day. Tip: go there during evening time just before finishing day's trip.

The walk to the cave is almost 2 kms but is easily coverable with good access roads...the cave is serene combined with mythology and you are transferred to a pre gothic era about bhasmasura having scared Lord Shiva into hiding at this cave and throwing boulders to close the cave and lord shiva taking disguise of a croc...resembling stones in the cave...overall must visitplace in Pachmari

Hows the weather there in may? Is it right time to go?
Written 6 May 2019
Although the location is cooler due to waterbodies there but traveling etc will be in 35+ degree temperature. Post rains and before onset of summer is preferable period of visit.

I am going by my own vehicle ? Is there a parking nearby and what is the distance of the stairs from the parking ?
Written 1 November 2018
Yes you can go by your own vehicle as there is enough parking space just outside the temple & the distance of stairs from there is hardly 200 meters.
