On our way to Nirvara Plantation Stay in Saklesphur, we decided to take a little detour to this beautiful church in the village of Shettihalli. This church was built by the Europeans about 160 odd years ago. It is built near the banks of the river Hemvathi and is surrounded by lush greenary and water all around it.
Lost in ages, this church is very unique. During summer you can literally go inside the church and take some breathtaking pictures while in the monsoon it is impossible to reach the church as it would be submerged in the water. This is because of the dam that is built close-by. Shettihalli Church is surely a must visit during both the seasons as each of the experiences would be much different from the other.
When we visited Shettihalli Church, we could not even see 90% of the ruin as it was completely submerged in the river. We entered the river close by to the ruin and were able to have a lot of fun in the water. Usually you would have coracle rides to take us around the ruin but it was not available when we had visited the place.
It is situated around 205kms from the city of Bengaluru, so it would be a good 3 hour drive if you would want to complete this in a single day. However, if you are visiting Sakleshpur like we did then that would be the perfect opportunity to stop by at Shettihalli church and have a great time.

If you are somebody who loves ruins then you must definately go for it. The submerged old church with water all around makes for a scenic spot. We drove here on our way back to Bangalore from Sakleshpur. From the Bangalore - Mangalore highway we took a right & this route was beautiful with winding roads through lush greenry, gorgeous paddy fields on both sides & tiny little ponds all through. We had mobile signal throughout so it was easy to navigate. After a few Kms this road meets State highway 110 which leads you to the Church. Just before the Church you cross a huge bridge over Hemavathi river. The sight is breathtaking. You can spot the church from here. To get to the church you have to park the car close to the road. Afterwhich you can walk to the church. Its a about 10 min walk. Make sure you wear shoes as there are bushes & some parts are slushy because of the water. There is nothing much to do here once you get to the church except taking pictures. Its sad to see how ppl have not even spared a monument like this also with their writings & vandalism. Would not recommend this place with small kids, elderly ppl or ppl with limited mobility.

I travelled during early September. During this time of the year it rains crazy. I got to see the topmost part of the church and the rest lying beneath the Hemavathi waters. I believe that there are coracle rides that will lead you close to the church structure, however, this option is not available due to pandemic. Nevertheless, clicked some beautiful pictures and experienced the soft and cool breeze. Ideal as a stopover when travelling to Chikmaglur, Kukke/Dharmastala. There is also a cafe on the opposite side of the road for light snacks and beverages.

Worth taking all effort to reach this place. While many say that the beauty of this place is during monsoon but I personally felt that the beauty of this place is during sunrise or sunset ans mainly after the monsoon. It gives u space to capture shots in any angle

I wish the place was retained and maintained. Amazing to see that someone came all the way here to build this beautiful church. It still stands for us to visualize and feel how it would have been. I wish it's renovated someday and bought back to its glory.

The high ratings are unrealistic, and so does the snaps that are showing up!
First, it is away from the Hassan city and the roads are very narrow and pathetic to the site. Next, you wont even realize that there is such a spot when you reach the place. You have to park somewhere in a nearby bush to walk down the narrow lane to reach the river banks.
It is a dilapidated structure not worth a trip. Nothing to be good about it.

Very Scenic place with good vibes. Photos come too good. Sundays are a bit crowded, there was a mass with nice music. The last leg of the road doesn't seem motor able. We parked beside the road and walked for about 800 mts through the mango orchard.

Its a beautiful place for pics and a pleasant place to spend time ar Hemavathi River. Main attraction is to witness the drowned Church which speaks of our History.
And please dont consider review given by DR_SRBABU Sir. The road to the Shettihalli Rosary Church is very good and worth the watch.

THis Church is located near the backwaters of the Gorur Hemavathi . This church is half the year immersed in water and can only be seen during the summer.

Hi, I am planning to visit here in Christmas holidays how will be the condition of that place in Christmas there

I don't recommend this place for special occasions. Weather wise it will be cool and comfortable..
The place is not at all maintained so for casual visit it's ok you can probably spend couple of hours at the max.

How safe is the place? How are the roads to reach the destination?
Written 9 November 2017
The place looked very safe. Hardly any people around and you can take your vehicle all the way near the church...

Hey! your review is really well written. I did get some epic shots with dramatic clouds in June. Plan to go this week. Any clue where I could take the coracle ride for close up frames of the submerged church? Also I hope the church aint fully submerged in Aug.. Cud u help? Tnx
Written 11 August 2017
Thanks for that...
I hope it will ever submerge from now on...
I visited thrice in the months of October, July and the other one I don't remember.. Never found so many water there... But this season there is water, but don't expect it to submerge the church...
You can get to see little more water compared to June as till June we had not much rains. The situation is little better now...

Hi,
Is it the correct time to visit the church ruins (June end i.e 24th June)
Written 22 June 2017
Buses rarely ply on this route. Cab's you can definitely get, do negotiate hard else you will be taken for ride. Note the route is usually deserted and is very narrow, at times your cell network may go on this route. Better is hire self drive car or your own car and visit the place. June - Aug you will see the church submerged in water, this is also a good experience however the view is majestic when you go in non rainy period.

I have heard there are lot of local gundas here...is it a safe place for girls too..

This place is isolated. I have been to this place twice (one in afternoon and one in evening). During afternoon, i found this place to be quite ok and flooded with tourist. But during my next visit during evenings, found people drinking at that place whom looked like local people. Better avoid staying there late when with girls
