Description:

The Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Library & Museums is dedicated to...

The Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Library & Museums is dedicated to 19th U.S. President Rutherford B. Hayes and First Lady Lucy Hayes. The site houses their 25-acre wooded estate, known as Spiegel Grove; their 31-room Victorian mansion; the presidential library; a museum that was completely renovated in 2016; the tomb; and a mile of paved walking trails.

There are fees to tour the museum and the home. Use of the presidential library, which has a massive genealogy and local history collections, is free.

The first floor and and part of the second floor were restored in 2012 to look as it did when Rutherford and Lucy lived there. Nearly all of the furniture, paintings and artifacts in the home belonged to and were used by the couple and their family.

The museum was renovated in early 2016 and includes interactive exhibits that tell the story of Rutherford and Lucy, the issues they faced and what they thought about those issues. Sit at a replica of the Resolute Desk - the original was given to President Hayes and still sits in the Oval Office of the White House - try on a Civil War soldier's haversack and more.

The Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Library & Museums is America's first presidential library and the forerunner for the federal presidential library system. The facility is celebrating its centennial in 2016.

The site is open seven days a week most of the year. From January through March, it is closed on Mondays.

It is also closed on Christmas, New Year's, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Easter and Thanksgiving. Hours on federal holidays are noon to 5 p.m.

My husband & I were on our way from MI to NC to visit our daughter & family but decided to go a little out of our way to stop here. We were impressed with so many of the family's original furnishings and pictures on the walls. Our guide (my husband & I had a private tour as no one... More

Alot of history in the museum , the exhibits were great. We spent about 2 hour in the library and then toured the house. The house tour was fantastic. President Hayes bought quite a few items from a White House yard sale and had them in his house. Now days they take unused items and put them in storage. We... More

We decided to drive from Mentor, OH to Fremont, OH to check out this presidential library and museum and we're SO glad we did! This is only the second presidential museum we've visited, but we were highly impressed. The grounds are known as Spiegel Grove and include the library (which we did not see), the museum, the president's home and... More

This was the eight presidential museum I have been to. Five were run by the Federal Government and three run privately. This one is privately run but as good or better than the others. I arrived right before they opened on a Thursday. The grounds (Spiegel Grove) were already open and there were several people walking dogs and exercising. The... More

Happened upon this by accident, and it was one of the hi-lights of our trip. Spent 4 hours touring the Mansion & Museum. Wish we would've had time to research our genealogy in the Library (Hayes collected genealogy books). Incredible man, with an amazing family. Well worth the stop!

The Hayes Library and Home is a wonderful way to learn more about American History after the Civil War. Lucy Hayes was quite a woman. The home has had extensive renovaitions to take it back to the President's time period and is magnificient. There are always wonderful activities like the big Forth of July celebration so if you plan to... More

This is a great place to visit. The home is very nice and includes original items. Per our tour guide, this home was occupied until 1965 by a Hayes family member and they didn't get rid of anything. The museum includes a lot of neat memorabilia. It isn't very large, but that is ok. I wish we build build like... More

Our nation's first Presidential Museum/Library! Plenty to see of the man himself in the museum - including his collection of Abe Lincoln's artifacts and a wall containing a letter from every president of the United States. The adjoining house is a treat due to all of the original artifacts and history behind items. Well worth a trip - you'll need... More
