Visited this town whilst in Australia.
Unusual in some ways, but throughly enjoyed. A lot to see as you walk up the street

Hahndorf is a small town in South Australia that was settled by Lutheran migrants. The architecture is German in style and is home to many shops and cafes on the main street. I was disappointed as the town seemed more geared to the tourist rather than its German heritage. It is a walkable town and offers many food options such as cheeses, honey, and chocolates. The town is a state heritage site. Hahndorf is the oldest German settlement in Australia.

Took the history walk and learnt so much that I didn't know about this great town. Lots of history behind the modern frontages of these old buildings. Tour was fairly easy, and hard to get lost. Just hard to stop yourself going in to all the shops !

Historical Hahndorf is a very popular village in the Adelaide Hills, once you have found a carpark set aside an hour of two to explore and wander along the tree lined Mt Barker Road. With a little bit of effort it was easy to discover many of the historical dwellings in the village, many of the buildings are labelled, date of build, purpose of the building, the names and livelihoods of the owners, our favourite building was the Hahndorf Academy. There are many cafes and restaurants along the road, unfortunately Hahndorf targets tourists where value for money, quality and style are lacking, yet so close to Adelaide which is quite the opposite.

Fascinating village full of history. We parked in a 3 hour park nit long enough and had to move. Lots of old buildings and tastings. Very pleasant way to spend a few hours. Unfortunately the chocolate tasting was closed.

We caught a public bus from the centre of Adelaide to Hahndorf and it was an easy, inexpensive and interesting way to visit this pretty village. The main point of interest, for me, was the architecture and tree lined Main Street. I had hoped there might be some unusual shopping but, apart from two or three shops, the range was predictable. Certainly worth a visit.

Hahndorf is a must visit village whilst in the Adelaide region. Very historic, interesting and picturesque if also rather overwhelmingly touristy. Loads of great food and treat options, many but not all, with a German twist so make sure you visit hungry! The walking map from the visitor centre provides info on various buildings on the 1 km main street. It's also worth taking the short drive to the outskirts to visit the Cedars, the home and art studio of Hans Heysen.
