About a 15 minute drive from Goolwa, the Murray Mouth is situated on Hindmarsh Island. It is a wild area consisting of sand dunes, grasses and wild flowers. There’s a short walk to a lookout which overlooks the Murray Mouth but if you want to venture along the sandy tracks, this will lead you to the Murray River itself with the ocean in the background. The sand along the track is very loose so if you have any mobility issues, this walk may not be for you. Quite a hauntingly wild and beautiful place.

Hindmash Island is well worth a visit, The Murray Mouth area has car parks and viewing areas. Toilets are over near the boat ramp (about 3kms away)

A 4 wheel drive comes in handy.

Having a 4 wheel drive vehicle made the journey to the mouth of the Murray quite an experience. Had only seen it from a cruise boat prior. Another tick off my bucket list.

So wonderful to see the Murray River mouth - something we have wanted to do for such a long time. It was wonderful to see it from a cruise on the Coorong and a 4WD drive along the beach - stunning!

Still no tourist facilities!

The significance of this end to the "Mighty Murray" is undermined and not promoted as a place where tourists can stay for more than an hour or so! No picnic facilities, toilet is 2.9km away! Such a contrast to where the Murray starts from at the Hume Dam in NSW!

Murray mouth

There is little flow of water into the ocean. This means that there are 2 dredges always there. However it is fantastic to be at this location where the might Murray river flows into the ocean.
