About
Home to the largest single collection of free flying birds in Australia (some 500 of them!), Birdworld Kuranda in the Australian highlands of the Atherton Tablelands displays no less than 75 species of the most spectacular birds from all corners of the planet - as well as from the earth’s fast diminishing rainforests.Visitors are free to wander through the lush, tropically landscaped bird sanctuary to observe the birds in their own specific - yet natural - habitats. Two lakes connected by a tumbling waterfall for example are home to waterbirds such as stilts, herons and Australia’s own unique Black Swan. In Birdworld's rainforest canopy overhead, blue, gold and scarlet Macaws dazzle with colourful brilliance as they soar above the tree tops. One outstanding Birdworld denizen not to be missed is that rare avian giant, the Cassowary - an Australian bird now officially enlisted as endangered.Designed to "create a centre where birds would be showcased in their natural environment without the barriers of cages coming between them and their admiring public", Birdworld Kuranda is a photographer's paradise. (And without those barriers, visitors often find a feathered friend nestling on their shoulder - a golden photo opportunity!) Birdworld Kuranda can provide guided tours for all group bookings.

- Bronte S103 contributionsSo much fun!!I had the best time at Birdworld Kuranda!! The birds were incredible and so friendly. I purchased bird food at the front for a very cheap price, which attracted dozens of birds to sit on my shoulder. I couldn’t stop smiling the entire time and had so much fun. I loved how interactive the experience was; you got the rare chance to be up close with the most beautiful, exotic birds and admire them from both close and afar. I also loved the Cassowary down the back of the enclosure.Visited July 2024Travelled soloWritten 22 July 2024
- J B5 contributionsAmazing and worth visiting!Amazing!!! I absolutely loved Birdworld Kuranda. It is a great open aviary where the birds are so sweet and land on you and you can pet them. I loved all of the birds, but absolutely fell in love with two of the Alexandrine parrots that were the sweetest, snuggliest, and cuddliest birds I have ever seen. I definitely recommend a visit to Birdworld Kuranda.Visited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 18 August 2024
- Eden75 contributionsAmazingBest part of Kuranda. Birds coming and sitting on my he'd without prompting. Very knowledgeable keepers. Seeing birds nestin on eggs was amazing. Receptionist was really helpful with tickets, as the Butterfly Sanctuary didn't tell me I needed a receipt to get a discount at Bird World. I spent way too long here because I was having so much fun.Visited September 2024Travelled soloWritten 5 September 2024
- leeanzGisborne, New Zealand43 contributionsUp close and personal with colourful birdsLovely place to walk around and look at the birds. Not huge, but the whole aviary is enclosed and easily walkable. There is also an area to feed the birds. Even if you're not feeding them they may land on your shoulders. I did get nipped by one parrot, but then had a lovely conversation with another who whistled and meowed at me. We spent quite a while just watching the antics of the various birds.Visited July 2024Travelled with familyWritten 14 September 2024
- Ravinder BolangdySydney, Australia3 contributionsHighlight of Kuranda Village!Delightful experience with an interesting and varied group of avian friends right from Lorikeets, Cockatoos, Parrots and other exotic birds. It was great fun to have them eat from your hand or hop on to your arm. The walk around was cool and a pleasure listening to different bird sounds. Could not resist taking several photos of the birds. Overall. a truly wonderful experience and certainly worth the visit! Kids will really love this place.Visited September 2024Travelled with familyWritten 25 September 2024

I am basing this review based on the web site rather than the actual bird display.
Where does one begin. SO, we decided to visit and went on line to find info on tickets. It is very clearly stated that to maintain social distancing places are limited and one should - book on line. Then up popped a chat screen. I said I could not find a seniors discounted price. I was advised - oh that is only available at the "entry gate" ??!! I explained that the web site stated we should "book" to ensure we got in , and a long 2 hour drive on the change of getting in may not be worth it. Sorry was the response . So we bought tickets at the "full price"
On arrival we saw everyone being let in with no issues . ( not happy) Also be aware that is you purchase a multi ticket on line to visit more than one place you "must" go the the display you booked your tickets FIRST. If you go to any of the other exhibits first you will be REFUSED entry and told to go the exhibit you booked the ticket through first.
Birdworld is nice and lovely to interact with the birds and take photos, but at $20 each it is over priced. it was a concern that there was very little if any social distancing happening and no staff to ensure the 1.5m rule is observed.

Many thanks for your feedback. I'll simply say that we've had to deal with change upon change upon change from the Government at often less than a few days notice. We had a period when our web developer was away and got these issues attended to. I do apologise for this, but we did our best in the circumstances. And sorry for the delay as I've had issues with getting blocked from responding. As regards the 'refusal' that is a very frustrating issue which we are attempting to address. For the record at the time you entered, there was no 1.5 per m2 rule in force at our facilities as we were exempt. I'd very much appreciate hearing from you to ensure that every issue you've raised is now dealt with.
Many thanks.

Visited with two adults and one 9-year old child in the beginning of January 2020.
The place is full of different parrots and other birds who are also nesting inside the area. The birds are tame and enjoy to be petted.
The site is quite popular, since being well advertised in Cairns, but it was a good visit, nevertheless.

I struggled to select anything higher than three stars and would have preferred two and a half…
Having paid over $260 for the sky rail and train it was a bitter pill paying $50 for 2 adults and a 6 year old to visit the bird sanctuary.
It’s a short board walk (100m or so) of random birds and something you can complete in under 20min.
Spending even more to see the butterflies seemed criminal. This on top of the traders who feel so comfortable ripping off anyone who visits.

Dear John. Firstly apologies for my delay as I'm getting blocked and having other issues with this platform. The idea of Birdworld is that it is not about a stamp collection set out in a succession of enclosures. This is an immersion experience where one takes time to enjoy the company of the birds, interact with them and enjoy their multitude of personalities. We have many families with children the same age as yours who absolutely love the experience. We are not responsible for other activities or people you may have encountered on your visit. We have a very wide range of native and exotic species, with waterbirds and the beautiful finches. If you were unhappy then it is a simple matter of letting us know. And I invite you to contact us directly. Many thanks for your feedback. Kuranda is a compact Village and there is no room for us to expand, we'd love to, but cannot.

We were advised to remove all jewellery before going in, as birds are attracted to shiny objects.
When you enter you find yourself in a large Avery, where the birds fly around free range. It was a little bit scary when the birds first start to land on you, but you get used to it.

Hi Dale. Thanks so much for you delightful comments and thanks for pointing out the need to remove jewellery and shiny objects. They also love the bottons on caps! We are currently closed to the public due to the COVID19 compulsory restrictions, so we'll be sure to share you comments on our Social Media for visitors who will hopefully return when we are opened again.
For anyone who's been to Birdworld Kuranda and has not made a Tripadvisor comment on their experience, we'd love to hear from you as we are using this down time to update our web site.
Thanks so much for reaching out Dale. We're still here, and the birds are being well cared for during this time.

Were not expecting terribly much when we visited: thought it would be another tourist ripoff place. How wrong we were. Just wonderful. Plenty of variety in the birdlife and you get up and personnel with them - sometimes too much so. Could easily have stayed for hours. Well worth a visit.

This was the highlight of our day in Kuranda, we visited birdworld as part of our 3 - attraction ticket (butterflies, birds, and koalas) and enjoyed this one the most. Relatively short circuit loop around the aviary with hundreds of birds that each have their own personality and food interests (pick up some food from the reception). Please do not rush walking around the track, take some time and enjoy seeing the birds and feeding them. They will fly and land on your shoulders, arms, or at times head. I had a cap on that I took off after the cheeky birds tried to take the button off, also was wearing a shiny bracelet that they tried to peck at - it's cute. Obviously don't come if you have a fear of birds, I don't know why I need to write that at all. We had one bird named Jewel who decided to remain on my shoulder the whole time as we walked around the aviary - twice!

After seeing an advert for Birdworld on TV we decided to check it out (we are previous locals now living interstate home visiting family). Online booking was super easy and it’s one of the cheapest attractions. I can’t believe we had never been here in all our years of living in Cairns! The birds are incredible and friendly, I haven’t laughed so hard in years! Even our 1 year old son loved it and tried his hand at feeding some of the smaller birds.
Do yourself a favour and go to Birdworld, highlight of this trip for us

You have to park nearby then follow the signs to find this entrance behind some market stalls.
But once you have your ticket and paid the little $3 extra for some bird seed/fruit (recommended), you step through the doors immediately onto a platform of Parrots, who clearly understand new people means more food.
Most are well behaved, and some are just big cuddle bugs, its a great experience

Thanks for you support Cody and your excellent comments. Yes, we at the rear of the Heritage Markets in Kuranda Village. If you are self driving, there is plenty of free parking in the Village. Love your term 'cuddle bugs' so true.

I hope no one takes 4/5 as a “negative” because I enjoyed this place a lot, but it’s not a “must do” for the price. Birds will be all over you and I love animals so it was awesome for me, but it is a very short experience by choice because after ten minutes of feeding them it was just repetitive. I wouldn’t do it again but I am happy I did it once and I’d recommend it to others if you enjoy feeding birds. If you don’t have time or miss out on this then don’t feel like you missed a once in a lifetime thing.
You do see a cassowary which is incredible because they are so rare so that was cool.

Many thanks Ryan. As per your Google Review (the same). For those who love birds, Birdworld Kuranda is certainly appreciated, and if you don't have much of an attention span, then we would make the most of the experience. People who can focus and spend time to get to know the birds a little will really enjoy.

Last visited this aviary in 2003. There’s more parrots now. I’m an experienced parrot owner, having owned a red-tailed black cockatoo before (he’s now in a large aviary with a mate) and my two flighted pet Alexandrines I’ve had 27 years and 24 years respectively. We enjoyed our visit, although I wish the aviary was much larger for the water fowl and larger parrots. My feedback is, please give the parrots toys to chew. Coconut shells hanging on rope, walnuts strung up, large pine cones, toilet rolls to chew up etc. would be popular for them and cheap and easy to make and replace.
They have no toys, so take to pulling items off humans. My pet parrots don’t do that, and they are out flying around our house, as they have toys I make for them.
Some parrots here are gentle and some birds are not. I think many were unwanted pets, which could explain some of the naughty behaviour. The female eclectus is gentle and a sweetheart. So is the Alex who is missing a few toes

How long does it take to look around Bird World, we will only be in Kurunda for 2 hours ?
Written 7 February 2021
It is only small.. If you buy food for the birds you could stay a bit longer. I would say you could see it in 30 minutes.
