About
Grassy Hill offers a 360 degree view of Cooktown, the Endeavour River and the Great Barrier Reef. Although now quite heavily forested, Grassy Hill is so known because local aboriginals deliberately burnt the forest on the hill to encourage re-growth of vegetation and draw animals to the area for hunting. The landscape you see today from the top of the hill has changed little since Captain James Cook and the crew of the HMB Endeavour climbed Grassy Hill in 1770 to view the surrounding reefs enabling him to navigate a safe passage. The views today, especially at sunset and sunrise, are still as spectacular as in 1770 making Grassy Hill one of Cooktown's most popular attractions.

Not many lookouts have 360 degree views, but this one does. Fabulous views in all directions with a lot of history thrown in, remembering Cooktown is where Cook repaired the Endeavour. No visit to Cooktown would be complete without a visit to this treasure.

Nothing really to add to any other reviews - it's a gorgeous spot to watch sunsets. There's a couple of spots on the drive up the hill that locals stop at to have picnics, and they have great views too, but go to the top for the full 360 effect.

We visited the Grassy Hill lighthouse on a recent trip to Cooktown. We were surprised by the view which was very impressive.

It is a historical site that is well maintained.

If you have the time, it is certainly worth a visit.

Sunset around 6.30am. Spectacular views of cooktown. Fantastic place to watch a sunset/sunrise. You can drive up, watch those bends or for the fitter crowd walk or run. Certainly worth it

Grassy Hill boasts superb 360-degree views across Cooktown, the Endeavour River and beyond. At sunset the views are sublime - and I understand that is also the case at sunrise. If you want a good work-out, I also recommend the walk. In parts it is very steep. Grassy Hill is also very historic, it was an important hunting ground for local Aborigines, it is the site of an historic old lighthouse and it's closely associated with Captain James Cook, who climbed it often during his stay here while they patched up the Endeavour back in 1770.

Stunning views both out to sea and to the town and endeavour river. Well worth a visit. If you’re wearing a hat make sure it’s well secured as it is very windy!

Thanks for your great review and yes, definitely a handy tip to hold onto your hat (especially when the trade winds are blowing!)

Very pleasant location to watch the sun go down over the Endeavour River, long views and very quiet. Seeing the lighthouse and watching the moon to the east was an added bonus.

What a great spot to watch the sun set, whci we did even though we nearly blew away in the process. The little light-housejust adds to the over-all effect.

It certainly can be very windy up the top of the hill (especially during Winter) but the view is definitely worth it!

Great 360 degrees views of Cooktown and the Endeavour Inlet. A must see when in Cooktown. Very windy when we were there. The history of the Cook landing very interesting.
