Recognised as one of Australia's most unusual attractions, this world class...

Recognised as one of Australia's most unusual attractions, this world class natural history museum gives visitors a very exciting glimpse at what happened millions of years ago beneath our earth's crust. Rene Boissevain is a man with a passion. He has spent a lifetime travelling to every corner of the world to collect crystallised mineral specimens, gemstones, fossils and rocks. He searches only for the best - the most perfect, the most extraordinary, the most valuable, the rarest and the biggest. To house his growing collection of more than 600 individual pieces, Rene has built 250 m2 of tunnels and grottos for you to explore. Visitors are given a helmet and a catalogue to identify the specimens and explore the caves unguided. This virtual cave gives the feeling of finding these natural formations yourself. Carefully positioned and delicately lit, you are free to discover in your own time and encouraged to touch and photograph the crystals. Open your mind and put all expectations aside, this is not your average museum...

So glad we went in and had a look at the caves. Lots of crystals to see and fun to be had exploring with my parents and family with children aged 4, 6, 10, & 11. We all loved it. The children enjoyed wearing their miners hats with the light attached. It was surprisingly big and well lit up. Would... More

René says that when he built the caves he really wanted everyone to feel like they're discovering the crystals for the first time, and it really does feel like that for everyone especially children! Thank you very much for your lovely review. More

TLDR Version - Must see attraction if you're in the area. Being a Cairns local I had put off going to the Crystal caves for years as it was one of those places you read about but never quite get there. I wish I had gone earlier, it is truly amazing. In the words of my 7 year old "it's... More

We dropped by to see a local exhibit of a Crystal cave but found a museum made from Crystals from other countries. We chose not to go in because of that and the expense. The store was free and had an assortment of items mostly not from Australia.

Thank you for your review. Yes we are very international and we source directly from countries all over the world. Our store stands out because it's so unusual to see flags from so many nations flying in the middle of the main street in a small country town in Australia! It's a pity you missed going through the museum -... More

I thought the idea of extensive caves built in a shop was mildly ridiculous, and it is BUT weirdly wonderful too. We really enjoyed it. I did my degree in geology so I loved the exhibits, but my wife is a classical scholar and she enjoyed it as much as me. Great fossils, crystals, minerals etc displayed in a really... More

One of the things that makes The Crystal Caves Museum so special is that it appeals to everyone. Small children love it, people who "just like rocks" love it, and then we have people like you who really know the subject and understand each specimen, and you love it as well! It is truly an incredible collection - thank you... More

When I saw in the visitor book there were Crystal caves I go for a visit. Absolutely beautiful. Such a shame people have tried breaking pieces off some of the crystals. But this will happen if allowed to wonder freely and touch them all. Found the jewellery to be a tad expensive but would definitely recommend a visit if you... More

Thank you for your review. We are lucky that, after years of working and travelling, René has amazing contacts around the world. It means we have no need to use wholesalers and are able to buy usually directly from the source, so we can pass these savings onto our customers. Very happy that you enjoyed our crystals! More

Thanks! I like the way you include the chocolate in the list of things you like. For people who haven't been here... they are chocolate rocks, very nice indeed. Thanks for your lovely response. More

The staff here were so helpful and lovely. We really enjoyed all the beautiful crystal collections of Rene's. There is lots of jewellery to browse and purchase along with stones both in raw form and tumbled. The cave tour is definitely worth exploring. What a lovely place to visit I can see why Rene began collecting. I was trying to... More

We popped in whilst exploring the tablelands and was pleasantly surprised by what lays within the shop. Also went on the tour, somehow we hoped we would enter a real cave structure, though couldn't see how this was going to happen. The layout of the foam cave and many displayes was worthy of the entrance. We found it educational and... More

Thank you for your review. Considering we are in such a rich volcanic region, it is hardly surprising that visitors somethimes think that The Crystal Caves is a natural cave. And I am glad that the fact that this museum is indeed man made did not disappoint! More

hi, this is not an actual cave. the crystal cave is the name of the shop. However, its a beautiful shop and the staff are informative and friendly. Many of them noted my pendant (an usual antique smokey quartz) and commented on it. This showed me they know their crystals as no one ever notices this pendant. for a browse... More

We love Smoky quartz! Particularly the natural variety that has not been heat treated. Considering we have been here for 30 years, we do have a lot of knowledge on the crystals and fossils. Thank you for your review. More
