With its headquarters in the fine old Peak District market town of Wirksworth, the Ecclesboume Valley line, at nine miles, is Derbyshire's longest heritage railway. The line runs through some of the most pleasant scenery in the White Peak, from its joint station with the main line at Duffield to its northern terminus at Ravenstor, close to the High Peak Trail and the National Stone Centre.

The line provides services mainly operated by heritage diesel railcars, with four trains a day on summer weekends and on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays in the high summer. The timetable is designed to connect with East Midlands Trains' services to and from Derby and Nottingham. Visitors may wish to take advantage of a 'zigzag choo choo' all Day Rover Ticket issued by the railway and Trent Barton providing an excellent opportunity for discount travel through the beautiful derbyshire countryside by bus and rail. Steam hauled services are also operated at peak periods, please call us to check what is running.

If you would prefer to see the line from the Driver's cab or realise a childhood dream by taking the controls of one of our heritage steam or diesel locomotives then you can book that day to remember direct on our website. We offer a range of experiences to suit any occasion and budget.

Did this as part of a day out. It was nice to be able to wander round before the ride and get off and on where necessary at the numerous stops.

We visited this attraction in mid October and found it busy and bustling. The return trip from Wirksworth to Duffield takes about 90 mins. The railway has steam engines, diesel pulled trains and multiple units that run on different days and staffed mostly by very enthusiastic volunteers, young and old...nice to see !!! Most of the facilities are at Wirksworth... More

So nice to know there's so many people willing to give their time " free of charge" to help in so many ways on these railway s. Most impressed with a recent " meal 4 course s on a special evening " on board one of the lovingly restored train . Thoroughly enjoyed our evening a our own secluded carriage... More

I love heritage steam railways, and I love heritage diesel railways, especially diesel railcars. So a visit to the Ecclesbourne Valley Railway was bound to be a pleasure. Duffield Station, at the southern end, was so peaceful, apart from the odd mainline train rushing through. And there is so much to see at Wirksworth Station. The valley itself beautifully marks... As an ex volunteer on a similar railway in Wales I decided to stay in the area specially to visit the EVR. And I certainly wasn't disappointed. Cannot add to what my daughter has said. A wonderful, helpful, friendly bunch of ethusiasts. I thoroughly enjoyed driving the steam engine up the 1 in 27 incline, they even had me doing a handbreak start. As my daughter has said don't wear white. Thank you again EVR.

It was our pleasure to be able to teach you the necessary skills to 'crack the regulator open' and drive the engine up the incline.
