Having grown up in the area and now living way. It is always a lovely sentimental walk alongside the river to the stepping stones. We do visit regularly. Memories of my son falling off the stones into the cold water one Christmas time make me giggle, he was unhurt but his pride wasn't! That is now unlikely to happen (well... More

Take a pair of decent shoes and prepare for a bit of a walk to get to the start depending on your car park but Dovedale is well worth spending a good 1/2 a day in for those that enjoy countryside walks. Can get busy during peak times and expect to queue if you want to use the stepping stones... More

Car parks seem to get very busy. Vast majority of walkers seem to get only as far as stepping stones (10-15 mins each way) - beware they were treacherous in icy conditions, so take the right-hand stream bank to avoid crossing congestion there. Press on way beyond the stones for a continued lovely walk. We actually parked up at nearby... More

Took our 6 month old havanese to this walk on a very misty December afternoon, it was wet and cold, but I was still surprised to see so many people in the Dovedale car park, mostly with their dogs, the walk by the steam is pleasant and relaxing, although our puppy is not trained to see so many other dogs... Having been before we knew the area was beautiful and a lovely walk (gets steep at the end and there are steps). However, we previously visited on a quiet weekday March afternoon, and didn't think about how busy it would be on a bank holiday. There were a lot of people and we had a short wait to cross the...
