This superb narrow gauge railway is located in the Northern Pennines. The narrow steep access roads may be a bit daunting to some drivers but choose a fine sunny day and the reward is the arrival at Alston. Here is the station and headquarters of this lovely railway. The staff are friendly and helpful. Dine in their station cafe then... More

For many years, our Saturday treat was a ride on the first train from Alston to Kirkhaugh from where most of the other passengers returned by train and we stayed to eat our lunch, drink our wine and relax in completely silent and quite beautiful surroundings - a hint of Paradise perhaps - before sauntering back down the path by... There are so many inaccuracies in this review that I would like to correct. First of all, you posted this on the 31st December when we had been closed since the 30th October so I'm not sure when you visited? Reviewing something that is closed is very unfair and writing something where things are so untrue is also unfair. First... More

We have had a fabulous day visiting the railway today. Lovely staff, especially No 1 Elf!! The kids really enjoyed the whole experience and the adults had a great time too!! Will definately make a return visit - I would highly recommend a trip to South Tynedale Railway.

We went on the 30th so the Halloween trains were running. The stations and train were decorated and there were lots of dressed up characters! There were also some colouring activities and goody bags which were great as we had a bit of a wait for the train. They were diesel hauled that day which we didn't know, apparently steam... More

A short scenic ride along the valley and back. Our train was hauled by diesel locomotive. Thanks to the staff and volunteers for making it a good little trip. Exhibition and display just by the station - good to visit.

Thanks for the review and the comments. Alston is lovely isn't it! We are building a new café this year as the old one can't fit many people in, but Shirley will be staying to run it so the 5 star hygiene and food standards will remain. I do hope we see you back soon. More

A wonderful experience. Excellent, friendly and informative staff. The scenery is magnificent and the lemon drizzle cake in the cafe is to die for. I am sure visitors of all ages would enjoy a visit to this railway.

We visited this railway about 14 years ago when i was younger and now i have my own little one i thought it would be great to stop off and see how it was now. Overcast and windy day but the carriages are well set up to protect users from the elements. Very nice scenery and the staff i spoke... More

Visited the railway on a very cold and wintry day. We were greeted by the very enthusiastic and knowledgeable volunteers who help to run the railway. A very enjoyable ride on the train and we spotted lots of deer on the way. We arrived back at Alston and visited the café for a very welcome hot drink and slice of... More

We went on this twice whist staying at Haggs Bank. You can take your dog (s) as well, a brilliant nostalgic ride through stunning countryside. We oppted to walk back due to the abundance of wild raspberries. The little cafe on the station has good food and it is worth while visiting the the Hub museum.
