Soar above a breathtaking landscape, sculpted over time, decorated by nature and enjoyed by generations.Stand on top of Dunstable Downs for a view that will simply take your breath away. These Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) are designated for the quality of their chalk grasslands. As well as two Scheduled Ancient Monuments (Five Knolls and Medieval Rabbit Warrens) there are many other historical features and the site has much to offer you.The chalk grasslands of the Downs have miles of footpaths and several circular walks, a fascinating history and an abundance of plants and wildlife.Dunstable Downs is within the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and the highest point in Bedfordshire. The wind-swept ridge provides ideal conditions for a variety of air sports, especially kite flying. On calmer days it's the ideal site to enjoy the view and a picnic. Please note: Chilterns Gateway Centre is owned by Central Bedfordshire Council and managed by the National Trust.

... another fabulous walk over the downs. Always wonderful views, stopping to watch the gliders take off and land, and the paragliders were also taking on the elements. Great cafe too in the centre building.

Don't forget to pay your parking charge! Good views. Nice walks, dog friendly and PERFECT for kite flying! The golf course is opposite.

This is an amazing attraction and free to park for BB holders and NT members. Otherwise its £3 for all day parking. The money does go towards the charity. Great events through the year walks and craft activities. Flying a kite is probably the main...More

Great views. Nice visitor centre. Parking has to be paid for. Great for kite flying and picnics. Good little cafe too and a good set of toilets.

A really nice place to spend a couple of hours. Some parts are very steep, so not great for somebody with walking difficulties. If you go when the weathers good great place to watch the gliders.

Visited here with my local cycling club. It's a big National Trust space, with fabulous views over the Downs and efficient cafe service. The food looked very good and they have a wide range. Definitely one of my favourite cafe stops.

Stunning views. Depending on the weather, created life long memories and all didn’t cost a thing. Could happily spend many hours there.

Backpack. Especially as it has rained a lot recently and overflow parking is on a field. This way you are not restricted to the path, but wear wellies and bare in mind that it is windy up there. Wrap up baby! Enjoy.

It was only ever the ones that escaped from Whipsnade Zoo that made it to the downs. They used to be seen from the B4506 (Dunstable Road) hopping up and down the hill but within the grounds of the zoo. Not seen them in this... More
