This is a grand establishment on the main square in Tlaxcala and has very interesting murals inside depicting the history from ancient times, to the present.

The Goverment Palace, built in the 16th Century, is a mixture of Arabic architecture, Spanish and pre-Hispanic reminiscences. In the interior of the main patio are 450 square meters of colorful frescoes describing the history of the Tlaxcalan people, painted by Desiderio Hernández Xochitiotzin, the last of the great Mexican muralists. This is a must-see on your visit to Tlaxcala!

The murals are in the Palacio de gobierno--telling the story of Tlaxcala. They are well worthwhile. Plus Hernan Cortes lived here before he went to conquer Mexico City.

This is the same as the listing called Murals of the Government Palace. It is free to enter the building. There is a series of murals starting with the ancient history of the area and going up to modern times. The ground floor is pre-hispanic and the 1st floor shows the history once the Spaniards came to Tlaxcala. The murals are numbered making it easier to follow in sequence and understand the unfolding of local history.

Tlaxcala's Government Palace is a beautiful building that keeps a secret inside: there are wonderful murals depicting Mexico's centuries of history. Entrance is free and you will not regret investing your time in looking at the colorful and detailed scenes.

If you come from abroad you could hire a guide to explain the murals' sequence to you, or you can read or research a bit in advance so you make the most of this experience.

There is a 2nd listing for this same place. It is free, local artist illustrated the local history - such talent! Goes up the stairs and beyond - incredible detail. Open all day 'every day", photos allowed.

Free and only takes a few minutes to visit . . . well, our few minutes stretched into 30, but we loved it. Fascinating overview of the history of the area. I didn't understand most of it until we hired a guide the following day and found out the history behind some of the murals. I wish I had done a little reading first. The photos here are very good so I didn't add any new ones.
