Yes cool town to buy Copper. However our driver took us to a big place that has the fires and copper pounders, to see the whole process ect .Yes fabulous sinks and copper pots ect.
However ; there are other shops just next store and a free doors down that have just as much beauty and works and jewelry ; But WE BOUGHT ALL OUR STUFF at the FIRST
guy which made me feel very Guilty towards the next guys down the hill and some were cheaper as well. So don't buy it all from the big guy . (maybe the driver gets a Tip) don't know but my tip is look around to the others as well i could have bought bracelets cheaper at the next shops, I could see they wanted to bargain and were willing to do more bracelets for less pesos ,It was too late then I was done . But next time I will go around and look at others too.

We took a large coach from El Central de Autobuses in Patzcuaro for $35 pesos but it's a ways from the central square. There are small buses, combis, that you can flag down near the town center for about the same price but not as comfy a ride. It's a beautiful, traditional Mexican village with many fine shops with beautiful copper works by the local artisans, some quite pricey but lots of mid-range goods. Well woth a day trip. About a 30 minute ride from Patzcuaro.

I have a hotel in Patzcuaro (Hotel Casa Encantada) and I always highly recommend to my guests visit Santa Clara. It is a short trip from Patzcuaro. The various shops and workshops plus the museum are well worth the visit. It is fabulous to see some af the artesanos create the beautiful copperware. It is one of the best places to buy your gifts for the folks back home to let them know you were thinking of them. WHY? There are great gifts in every price range from earrings to gorgeous vases and they pack without trouble and do not break transporting them. Make sure you make time to see this lovely Pueblo and it's artesania.

Maybe a 30 minute drive over from Patzcuaro. The Copper Museum was closed but we saw the fun town square, complete with a copper bandstand, and there were two good churches more or less off the plaza worth a visit. And very nice copper souvenirs, liek hammer copped earrings for 40-60 pesos.

We must have arrived on a celebration day as the parking was very difficult and we had to walk fairly far to the center of town. That being said, there was music and dancing and food stalls and a street market that made our walk worthwhile. This is a quaint little town and the main product is copper which you see on display in all the shops and in the street décor. We would have liked to have a demonstration of the copper crafting but the craftsman was out sick for the day and we had very little time left to look for another craftsman.

A scheduled stop on our Airstream caravan, we visited the Casa de Felicitas and watched the process of making beautiful copper bowls, though that is certainly not all they make. All done by hand, no machinery. A must see!

Santa Clara del Cobre is only about a 20 minute drive from Pátzcuaro and is an interesting drive. The village is very small and there are not a lot of places to eat. It is MOST interesting to visit the workshops and if you like copper there is lots to buy. The main reason we came back a second time was to buy some specific copper items some of which we had bought last year and wanted more of. The second reason was to show the village to the friends we were travelling with. A couple of hours is all you need

Realmente el pueblo lo puedes recorrer en pocas horas sin embargo hay lugares muy interesantes para pasar la tarde disfrutando el lugar
Si se trata de recorrerlo consideró que en 5 horas

How did you travel to this town? I'm thinking about flying into Mexico City and renting a car to drive there and back. Any concerns about crime?

I can't answer the part about driving there, but Santa Clara del Cobre is a sleepy little village and very safe. It is very close to Patzcuaro and easy to get there by cab.
Make sure that you get to see the demonstration of copper workers. The one I saw was up the side street from the copper museum. Cobre el Porton is the name of it. (they have a website) Here are the directions: The museo de cobre is on the corner of the main street and a side street. Walk up the side street away from the central square. Cross the street and go to the last copper shop on the street. The store is huge, has several rooms that will look dark but they will turn on the lights for you.
I really would suggest taking a first class bus rather than driving. They are really nice and so much easier. There are now flights to Morelia on Volaris. Great airline.
