This beautiful old building was crowded with people of all ages and nationalities. There were multiple masses being said since it was Ash Wednesday and for a U.S. norte-Americano it was interesting to see the priests putting the ashes (created from the burning of Palm Sunday the year before) being placed not on the forehead but on top of the head. In addition to the main sanctuary filled with statues, stained glass and amazing woodwork there is a side chapel where services were also being held.

Beautiful church located in the highest part of the town. Its central nave with vaults is very beautiful. The mausoleum of Don Vasco (Quiroga's tomb) is in the chapel to the left of the main entrance. Some steps behind the altar lead up to the venerated image of the basilica's patron saint, Our Lady of Health. In the square where it is located there is an open-air market where they sell homeopathic remedies, religious items, handmade clothing...

This is the Basilica built by Vasco de Quiroga in Patzcuaro and contains the Virgin of Health which is venerated throughout Michoacan. The basilica was meant to have 5 naves but only this one was built. Don't miss it.

This church has a lovely location on a little hill above the hustle and bustle of the nice little center of Patzcuaro that sits below. From the Plaza Chica just walk uphill about two or three blocks and you come to a plaza with a sort of small market. Keep walking through the market plaza area and walk right into this very nice church. Why visit it? First of all it's lovely by itself. But it also has the tomb of famous Bishop Quiroga who is sort of the real father of this city. The church also is a center of healing too and many pilgrims come here for what they hope is the curative powers of the site (Nuestra Senora de la Salud or Our Lady of Health).

A gorgeous church in park surroundings. On the weekends the grounds are filled with market shops, crafts and clothes. A beautiful place to spend a few hours. Lots to look at.

This church is very popular with the local people, due to their reverence for the Virgin of Health. It is always packed on Sundays and Holy Days. The interior of the church was recently completely repainted and regilded. It is kept immaculately clean.

We took in the Basilica de Nuestra Señora de la Salud, which was more notable for its age and its status as a pilgrimage site than for any element of its architecture or decoration, which by Spanish Colonial standards was quite plain. The one exception was the santo of the Virgin, both the real thing, resplendent above the altar and the copy, accessible by stairs behind, where pilgrims pin little metal milagros depicting afflicted parts of the body in hopes that the Virgin will deliver a cure. The area between the street and the front plaza was chockablock with stands selling the typical local tamales (corondas), religious items and ordinary curios.
