- ddallas1969Linthicum Heights, Maryland738 contributionsCavesWe went at low tide and walked around. It wasn't too crowded. The restaurant didn't look appealing so we passed on that. Went past the town to the next cute little town. The caves are something to see if you are in the area.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 5 June 2024
- rlmptlLloydminster, Canada1,232 contributionsfabulous place to visit and try the ice cream at Octopusthis was an amazing place that i would definitely not miss out on. we were there later on in the day when it was low tide. the running stream of water made it impossible for someone without good balance to cross so could not actually get over to the caves but enjoyed them up close. there are a couple of restaurants and gift shops and other little stores too with a fabulous ice cream place called Octopus Ice cream with a lovely view of the sea and cute lighthouse inland with washroomsVisited June 2024Travelled with familyWritten 3 July 2024
- NCtravelzRaleigh, North Carolina1,747 contributionsPerfect stopWe had a great time here. We happened to catch low tide so we walked right out to the caves. It was still a little wet but very accessible. Plenty of parking. Nice place to stretch your legs.Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 10 July 2024
- hayleaaz4 contributionsCool experienceThe view was gorgeous, we went about 2 hours before low tide was scheduled to be at its lowest. We had read reviews beforehand & were worried that we would not be able to access the caves unless we were there exactly at the time of low tide but that wasn’t at all the case. It wasn’t as busy at the time we went, either, as it was when the tide was expected to be at its lowest (we drove by). I just recommend bringing sandals or some shoe that can get wet because there were a few tiny streams & sea grass along the rocks.Visited August 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 28 August 2024

I really loved this excursion from the cruise ship. My only regret is that I wish this was the only activity, because 1-hour just isn't enough time. We came here during low tide that way we were able to walk all the way out to the mouth of the caves (the caves are closed/off limits due to visitors' abuse.) If you can, drive yourself so you can spend more time here and not rush. We did a best of St John excursion, so we didn't have time to get anything to eat or much time to explore the area. The caves are part of the greater Stonehammer Geoppark, which is very large and full of activities. Wear good/sturdy beach shoes/sandals because going over the rocks can make you twist your ankle.

Staff is friendly and knowledgeable. The sea cave trip was disappointing though. We paddled a very short distance and spent just a few moments with each kayak backed into a small cave. Not really worth the money except that having competent sea kayak instructors and appropriate boats was prudent on a windy day.

It's not as spectacular as Hopewell Rocks, but it is pretty awesome nonetheless and far less crowded! You don't need to wait until Low Tide, or you can visit an hour or tour after Low Tide, when the crowds are less. We went just after Low Tide and we shared the entire location with less than 20 people. Awesome experience.

When I went at the end of May (just before the wildfires hit), it was extremely hot and the black flies were out by the millions. You couldn't get out of the car without getting eaten alive. So, I saw the sea caves from the parking lot for a few brief minutes. There were some people walking on the beach - they must have had a ton of bug spray on. From a distance, the caves looked nice and not something you see every day.

We visited St Martin specifically to see the Bay of Fundy, the caves, and the area. We camped near by and timed our arrival to be there at Low tide and stayed until High tide. When we arrived we walked from the far side of the bay, across the floor of the bay, into the caves. Very interesting, lots of sea life in the little pools, shells, weeds, everything you would expect on the floor of a bay. We then toured the area, stopping often and taking our time, slowly returning to where we started in St Martins. If you see both high and low tides you miss the significance of the Bay of Fundy and the tides associated with it. We had dinner at Caves Seafood marveling at how where we had walked was now deep underwater and the caves we had entered were nearly gone with the rising sea. Don’t miss it. We arrived at St. Martins just when the tide was almost fully out to sea. The beach looked pebbled from a distance but the rocks are deceiving and much larger than they first appeared and we definitely needed our hiking boots. We had to traverse a few streams and were unable to access the caves as they were roped off due to an earlier incident of a large rock falling from the cliff. These geological formations and the colours were very impressive and hopefully one day, I can return and explore these stunning caves.

I thought I had researched a low tide time. But no, I was here early at high tide. I could have waited a few hours as two camping families decided to do, sitting on their lawn chairs having breakfast and wading into the water. There was so much else to do in this area, I decided not to. Be here at low tide and you get to explore the sea caves and this part of the Stonehammer UNESCO Global Geopark.

An incredible place! We walked into the sea caves during low tide in May. The red cliffs and trees formed a picturesque landscape of red and green. Be careful of the slippery mud , rocks , and kelp! Wear proper water shoes and hiking sticks to get the best out of this stop.

You need to time this experience with the tides. An hour before low tide my husband and I were able to walk across a creek a few inches deep and climb around the caves. Make sure you go past the part visible from the shore as it gets much more amazing! Then come back in several hours to witness how the exposed rock is swallowed up by the tide. We drove the Fundy Trail Parkway while we waited and saw some great scenery there as well.

Are the caves still roped off to the public? I’m trying to determine if it’s worth a visit.

Can you access caves in middle of tide cycle or does it have to be at low?
Written 28 July 2016
There is one cave accessible during the cycle. But if you wait till the lowest it gets you can walk out around the point to more. Just be back around before the tide comes in or you will be stuck and habe to get wet to get back.

Yes, one family even managed to sneak two small dogs onto the patio of the casual restaurant nearby! (We all pretended to not notice... they were very quiet and it was on the beach anyway)

In my previous response, I meant Hopewell Cape. You can also drive the Fundy Trail within minutes of St. Martins which has some nice hiking trails and scenic lookouts.

I believe there are two restaurants side by side at the beach and one of them ( the yellow one) is licensed ?
Written 17 December 2015
The Caves Restaurant closes at the end of October and reopens May 1st. It is not licensed ( meaning it does not serve beer/wine, etc. ).
The Seaside Restaurant is also closed through the winter . They are licensed.
There is no cost to get in. Both have take-out. Both accept credit cards. Both are right on the beach & close to the sea caves ( an easy walk but you may have to get your feet wet, depending on where the tide is). Do not walk around the first point on an in-coming tide!!
There are car rentals available in Saint John, about 40-45 mins away.

As someone else has written this is a publicly accessible landscape feature. Most important consideration is the tides. Walking the trail above and the steps down to sea level may be treacherous in winter. The nearby restaurants are seasonal in nature. Most close the end of October. By international law no one can claim ownership of the seashore between the low tide mark and high tide. Access at low tide is free. There is rudimentary parking but expect no facilities.
