A short, but steep hike. Canada's 'gnarliest tree" at the end of the upper trail was a bit oversold with all the hype, but still pretty cool. Nicest of all were the sections that had steps or boarded paths to ensure better safety for all...More

One of the most amazing treks I’ve been on! We brought our 3 kids (6,9,15) and they all loved it. Not too hard, and certainly not boring! We’ll definitely do this again!

We had been here shortly after T. J. Watt made his discovery and began his campaign to protect the area from logging. Now several years later you can have the advantage of volunteer built walkways and look-outs. The road is very rough during the last...More

I was worried about the road and the rental car. The staff at the Wild Renfrew Cottages reassured me that a mid sized car would be fine. There are some potholes, but you just have to go slow. Drive towards Duncan and it is only...More

This was truly a fun adventure. Had never been to rainforest before. The walkway made it accessible, but still uphill climb. The off the stairs portion was still doable for many senior citizens whose knees work! It was beautiful and worth the time to get...More

They have worked hard to put more and more board walks in. It now gives Port Renfrew a great one two punch along with Botanical Beach

Great area to explore, the old growth trees are special, trail amazing easy, once you get in on the rough road! Four wheel drive best in any weather except dry. As weather is variable at all times of year take good boots and rain gear.

Easy hike up stairs and board walks to the Cedars in this small slice of forest. Some relatively big trees, but as for the Gnarliest tree in Canada... There is a Spruce up in Cape Scott Park that I believe more deserves that moniker.

Avatar Grove is a pocket of preserved ancient woodland near Port Renfrew. It sits on the territory of the Pacheedaht First Nation and if you look carefully in the groves you may see some masks attached to the ancient trees. This is an awe-inspiring place...More

The Avatar Grove trailhead is only a 12K drive from Port Renfrew, but the road got narrower and bumpier/rougher until our sub-compact rental car was just crawling along, so the drive seemed to take forever. We only hiked the Upper Grove trail to the World's...More

Nope. :-) It's all gravel, but truly worth the trip ... although wouldn't recommend it in winter!
