- JoeOBDenver, Colorado258 contributionsA true picture of the struggles to survive in the West.Enjoyed the State Park although was disappointed that the calvary fort and Custer house were closed. Seemed they had some kind of Halloween scare house thing going for the Halloween season. Though that was a bit tacky for a state historic site. The On-A-Slant village is really good, although the lighting inside the lodges was out so you could not easily read the information boards inside, view was spectacular out across the river. The Infantry area is very interesting and you can climb to the top of the building. While a little morbid it is interesting to also walk down to the cemetery and read some of the inscriptions on the markers. The information boards really painted the story well of the fort and the hardships endured by these soldiers.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 20 October 2023
- RussianBallerina91 contributionsClean, Accessible, Beautiful and a Must See!This state park is a must-see! First, the camping area is super clean and has a walking path alongside the Missouri River as well as a well paved road to the top of the fort area, providing beautiful, expansive views from above and below. Second, much has been done to rebuild the village of the indigenous people, who were gone before Lewis and Clark camped there. Third, the restoration of Custer's home and the barracks is top notch. This park is educational tourism at its best. We arrived late in the day, which I regret, but we will return and spend more time there.Visited August 2024Travelled with familyWritten 17 August 2024
- SaskadonMelville, Canada97 contributionsMore than just Custer’s Fort! This is an old fort, but there is more to it. Most of the buildings haven’t been restored, but there is enough to get an idea of what it would have been like. Unfortunately you have to pay extra to see inside the main house (Custer’s residence) Be sure to see the exhibits in the visitors’ centre, which is itself an interesting building. Then take the walk across the bridge to the Mandan indigenous village.Visited August 2024Travelled with familyWritten 19 August 2024

The RV Park was spectacular. The State Staff were so incredibly helpful helping us select a spot for our Pull Thru RV and tow car. We went on charter fishing with Kent of Big Muddy Fishing, and recommend him highly. Lots of hiking directly from the campground. Only suggestion is to have more trash cans, but that is very minor.

Definitely stop here to enjoy the park grounds and the history of the area. The park was very peaceful and the barracks were refurbished and so clean! Everything was displayed perfectly and looked like the men were still living there! Very well done! Really liked the historical posters that were hung throughout the area to give information on various soldiers. We did not go inside Custers House cause they had a tour on appointment- but the outside was nicely maintained. Next we headed to the Native American village replicas and that was also quite interesting. Learned a lot about their homes and how they lived in the area. Made it to the Forts that were out in the open prairie fields. Had some great views from the top of the forts where you could see much of Mandan all the way to Bismarck! Finally stopped at the museum where they had many artifacts on display too! This park had so many historical and natural areas to explore- really enjoyed our afternoon here. Also nice to have a gift shop and coffee cafe to get refreshments. The ranger told us that we could come and go as often as we liked because our admission was good for the entire day- really good deal!

For History afficionado, this is a good place. Love the information in the visitor center, and the video. If you read everything there and took lots of pictures, i Stayed total 3 hrs without the custer house tour. In the blockhouse, steep ladder just be careful, but good view of the missouri river from the top. Kinda creepy when you go to the cavalry squary buildings alone but its part of the experience.

This is a self guided tour but they give you a map at the beginning to follow. You have to pay for a tour of Custer house which we didn't know until we walked up to it and he said we had to go back to get tickets if we wanted a tour. Whe just decided to peek in the windows instead. I didn't think we missed much after looking inside. The barracks were neat to walk through and the posts were pretty cool too. I thought I was going to have a heart attack climbing the ladder to the top though. If you're afraid of heights, I suggest you don't look down but it's worth it for the view at the top. The village on the slant was cool to walk around. They're pretty bare compared to the one at knife river Indian Village but they're still worth seeing. The "teepee" is pretty dinky so I wouldn't waste the time to find it if I were you. Luckily we decided to look for it on our way out so we just had a laugh when we saw that it wasn't what we expected.

The Park is located in Mandan on the western banks of the Missouri River. The Visitor Center has information on the Park including an interesting film about the Civilian Conservation Corps and the construction of the Park.
The situation of the Park is beautiful with some nice views of the Missouri River. A replica of a Mandan village, On-a-Slant Village, is quite interesting and also a reproduction of Custer’s house can be seen on a guided tour.
Admittance is USD 7 per car.

I enjoyed visiting the historic buildings and visitor center. The campground is first rate with flush toilets and showers. My campsite was right on the banks of the Missouri River and I could sit at my picnic table and watch the speed boats and other watercraft on Labor Day weekend. There was a nightime activity for families involving glow in the dark necklaces/bracelets, and loud music scavenger hunt throughout the park. It ended around 10 p.m. and didn't bother campers at all. I found one of the music sites before I realized what was going on and when I learned it was a scavenger hunt I thought it was a great idea! If I'm ever in Bismark area again I will camp there again.

Nice park with informative visitors center. The rebuilt Mandan village was cool, but in need of some repairs. The old cavalry buildings are in good shape. Had a nice picnic next to the visitors center. The Commissary makes an excellent cold coffee. $7 per car for a day pass.

One of the best state parks I've ever been to & we've been to many. Beautifully cared for filled with lots of history from the Mandan people, Custer, the CCC. Well worth a day or 2 visit. If the campground wasn't already full we'd have stayed longer.

Is there an advantage to riding the Trolley to Fort Lincoln or is it best to take your own car?
Written 20 April 2017
The trolley is fun but it does restrict your time at the park because it only runs for a few hours. So it depends on how much time you want to spend at Ft.Lincoln. Or if you can have someone pick you up, you could ride the trolley one way but get a ride home.

would love to visit someday, meanwhile i am working n family genalogy and nee info on cemetery at fort how to find out if someone is buried there and also info on the town of Waltman montana that is close to mandan.thanks so much
Written 10 February 2015
From what I learned, the only people buried at the fort were those who died there. The wounded Survivors from the Battle of the Little Big Horn who were returned to Fort Lincoln by steamboat all died and were originially buried at the Fort's cemetery.... however they were eventually all returned and buried at the Battle site. You will find both native american and white americans buried in the cemetery. I was surprised to see some of the Native American graves were marked as being "Ree". Later we found out that they were from the Cree tribe and acted as scouts. I could find no listing of burial at the Fort. Maybe the Mandan Historical Society has a website you could check??
Mandan is about in the middle of North Dakota on I 94. It is a bit of a ride to the Montana border. I'm sorry but I am not familiar with Waltman Montana.

Your trip is just before Memorial Day weekend. Parks are usually in full swing beginning Memorial Day weekend. So I would guess - yes. I would check the Fort Lincoln website about a month before your trip. The guided tours for the On-A-Slant Indian Village start at the Visitor's Center. Go in to the welcome desk and ask for when the next guided tour is - so they know you want to be included. The House is great to tour. The guides are in character. You just park - walk a short distance right up to the porch and wait for the tour to begin. I'm sure you will enjoy the park and don't miss going up to the Infantry Post for beautiful views of the Missouri River, the fort, and the cemetery. Beautiful at dusk.
