Description:

Built in 1771, the Burgwin-Wright House and Gardens is the only structure...

Built in 1771, the Burgwin-Wright House and Gardens is the only structure in Wilmington from the colonial era open to the public. Operated as a museum house, it offers visitors a unique opportunity to view a fine example of Georgian architecture and experience what life was like during pre-revolutionary Wilmington. All rooms are furnished with 18th and 19th century antiques and showcase hundreds of objects. Occupying two-thirds of an acre, the colonial style gardens consist of seven distinct areas, including an orchard with pomegranate and fig trees, a kitchen garden and a rose garden. Built on the foundation of a former city jail, circa 1744, the house retains many vestiges of its previous incarnation such as outdoor and sub-basement jail cells and a freestanding kitchen house with a massive hearth complete with period cooking utensils. Guided tours include the stories about the people who lived and worked here and the women's organization that saved this landmark from the wrecking ball.

Tours are Monday-Saturday 10am-4pm. Tours are on the hour with the last departing at 3pm.

Toured here with a group of three other friends and there were two additional people in our group. Tour guide was excellent, gave us a lot of the history of the house, the people who lived there and the furniture. Unfortunately they don't allow you to take pictures, but everything was beautiful. The house is built on top of what... More

The Burgwin Wright House is another must see for anyone interested in history. The home has been furnished with period pieces and the dining room is located on the second floor. Be sure to ask your guide why... The gardens are beautifully done and you will also get to se what served at one time as the local jail.

What a wonderful way to spend a summer afternoon. The house is lovely. Beautifully restored and maintained. The gardens are so peaceful. I especially want to give our tour guide a shout out. She was enthusiastic about the subject matter, and was so knowledgeable. I can't wait to come back for one of the evening tours.

A jewel of a museum for Revolutionary War buffs. Beautiful house and gardens. General Cornwallis' commandeered this home for his Wilmington headquarters

Beautifully brought back to days gone by. The 2 young ladies are history majors and what an awesome job they do at making you feel like you lived in that time. Gardens blooms were gone but we were able to do senior pictures in the garden.

We discovered this house by perusing the travel literature for Wilmington. We are glad we stopped. We parked at a metered space directly in front of the house. The next tour began shortly after our arrival and we had a wonderful guide who was clearly fascinated with her work. She added greatly to our tour. The history of the home,... More

We toured the house today. Our guide was Josh, who had incomparable knowledge and provided a fantastic tour. He obviously was passionate about history and gave a very in depth view of the house and it's story. He answered any of our stupid questions with thought out and reasoned responses. I highly recommend this tour, particularly with Josh.

Fantastic home. Very knowledgable guide that explained the history of the house and the mind set of those who lived there and the politics of the day. Wise investment of time!
