Somewhat Narnia-esque with the rambling vegetation and winding pathways, Oakdale Cemetery is also walking distance to such eclectic and charming residential neighborhoods as Carolina Heights. Easy to find and rich in history. Wilmington's first elected mayor buried here. Found the monument to fallen Confederate soldiers interesting. Caretaking was spotty but still a a very peaceful place.

Throughout the year, the Cemetery Committee has special tours. We took the Funerary Art Tour and learned about the statuary of the grave sites from the Victorian era.If a tour is not available, take a walk when the graveyard is open. Worth it.
