Went for a Valentine's dinner date aboard a train car. The event was wonderful, good food, and super nice folks. As for the museum in general, there is a lot of cool stuff to check out. What amazed us is that the gift shop was closed at the time, but an employee found us a conductor's hat for our son... More

On a warm February Saturday morning I decided to venture 30 minutes from Winston-Salem,NC for the 11:30am train ride. My 2.5yr old toddler son is very much in to his trains so figured we would get there an hour early, do a little exploring, then hop on the train before heading home. What I didn't expect is that my son... More

This is a great ( and educational) way to spend a couple hours. It is inexpensive (IMO) and lots of neat things to see. My biggest tip is don't miss ALL of the Round House. I saw a lot of people stop and not walk through the doors. Make sure you keep walking. Some really cool Pullman cars mail and... More

Take a step back in time and visit what used to be the steam repair shop for the Southern Railway in the days of steam locomotives. For real Road aficionados, this is heaven. Numerous restored engines ranging from steam and diesel, F3s and a Shay, in an operating turntable and 30+ bay round house. Train rides and turntable rides are... More

The North Carolina transportation museum is located in Spencer, North Carolina. It was the midpoint between Atlanta and Washington DC for Southern Railway. It has a 37 stall round house with an operating turntable. There is approximately 2 1/2 miles of track work. There are several locomotives, rolling stock, passenger cars and cabooses on site. You can go for a... More

The location for this is incredible - immense in size, with a very large roundhouse, turntable, and collection of steam and early diesel locomotives. There is a wing where they are actually restoring diesel locomotives and passenger wagons. There is an adjacent large building where they assembled the locomotives, but that is off limits and still being restored. The other... More

What great gem. Our family had a great Saturday at NCTM love the working roundhouse, all the displays and specially the train ride with the J class steam Engine #611 pulling the way. The staff was real friendly, helpful and accommodating. Found the place very interesting and full of lots of great history. Looking forward to another visit sometime.
