The North Carolina transportation museum is located in Spencer, North Carolina. It was the midpoint between Atlanta and Washington DC for Southern Railway. It has a 37 stall round house with an operating turntable. There is approximately 2 1/2 miles of track work. There are several locomotives, rolling stock, passenger cars and cabooses on site. You can go for a... More

The location for this is incredible - immense in size, with a very large roundhouse, turntable, and collection of steam and early diesel locomotives. There is a wing where they are actually restoring diesel locomotives and passenger wagons. There is an adjacent large building where they assembled the locomotives, but that is off limits and still being restored. The other... More

What great gem. Our family had a great Saturday at NCTM love the working roundhouse, all the displays and specially the train ride with the J class steam Engine #611 pulling the way. The staff was real friendly, helpful and accommodating. Found the place very interesting and full of lots of great history. Looking forward to another visit sometime.

We attended this museum solely for the Day Out with Thomas and Percy event. We had a great time, the event was well organized. There is very little shade on the premises without actually going inside, so keep that in mind. It was a very hot day and we were all getting a bit miserable from the heat and no... More

This museum is still being developed BUT well worth going there now. Wonderful exhibits and even a Roundhouse that operates on some schedule.

They do a great job with Day Out for Thomas. There were so many things to do: Bouncy Houses, face painting, maze for kids to run through, live music, fire truck and photo opportunities. Yes, there was Thomas and his friend Percy to take rides on. There were food vendors who sold peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and Hersey ice... More

First time visiting the NC Transportation Museum. First off, it's a giant place... not the best place for anyone that may have mobility issues. A lot of the complex is uneven and going over train tracks... fyi. When we parked the information building was closed so we were little confused on where to go. We followed the path all the... More
