- Getaway591171362401 contributionMuseum at New NorciaThoroughly enjoyed the museum. So much to read and loved the early black and white photos. Learned about the Aboriginal cricket team amongst other things. Art Gallery was interesting as well, although not necessarily a fan of contemporary art, some were surprisingly good. The work that went into the textiles is amazing. Life at St Joseph's was not easy by the look of it and good to see the acknowledgement of the past. I enjoy gardening, so Charles Gardener was a surprise. A family member that I went with and was a return visitor said that the front of the museum has had an upgrade with shade sails and seating, both of which look good. Only complaint is the toilets, which could do with modernisation. We are so glad you enjoyed your time in our Museum and Art Gallery. There is so much to see, and we are a happy that you enjoyed your time here looking at what New Norcia has to offer. - Mark T11 contributionsEven on a wet day, fantastic. We arrived in time to be part of the 2 hour guided tour with our lovely guide, Melissa. She is a wealth of information about all things Benedictine. The hard ship's endured by all the Monks and locals was definitely not for me. Sadly time is not being kind to the building's. It's a must see, even in the rain an umbrella was all you needed. Come for a day trip soon.We are so glad you enjoyed your time in our town. There is so much to see, and we are a happy that you enjoyed the tour with our guide. - tigerlady21Perth, Australia24 contributionsMust make the time to see New Norcia.New Norcia Museum and Art Gallery is a must see with an amazingly beautiful collection of old masters and contemporary art work. The staff are so welcoming and very knowledgeable. I really recommend making the time to do the town walking tour, that is on at 11am or 1:30pm each day. This way you hear the history of New Norcia and see in the incredible buildings. Check out the gift shop for many locally produced products, as well as New Norcia made products like the fantastic breads, nut cake, wines, ports, Ale, and award winning olive oil. A lot to see in one place so it’s great they have accommodation and camping areas so you can stay and enjoy. We are so glad you enjoyed your time in our Museum and Art Gallery. So important to know our history. We were fortunate to join the tour as we were a little late. So informative and interesting. Jim was wonderful. Loved having a sing in the music room…the acoustics!!! It was wonderful to be able to see inside the buildings. We hope these buildings will be preserved so that our history is remembered.Thank you for your lovely review. The museum and gallery is a into this part of WA's history. There is an amazing array of Spanish artworks on display which would do any metropolitan museum proud. The gift shop has a good range of Benedictine-made items (olive oil, cake, bread, wine) as well as Abbey beers made off-site. We took an enjoyable town tour with Sue who showed us what is on offer today as well as gave us an insight into the lives of the early and present-day monks.

Note that this is purely a review of the New Norcia Museum & Art Gallery - not the town itself, or the tours, or any other part of the town.
The museum and gallery are well laid out even though it's had to be retrofitted into an old building. It covers a few levels but a lift is available for those who can't manage steps.
The museum section highlights the history of New Norcia through a mix of objects, display boards and the like. Lots to read and lots to see. There are a couple of special collections and displays which are also worth looking at. There are certainly some treasures there. Some of the religious pieces are amazing and the sort of things you would find in good European museums.
The artworks have a focus on religious images and are wonderful. They include lots of European artworks dating back centuries as well as a growing collection of more contemporary (mainly Australian) art. Well worth taking time to admire.
Well worth a visit. I should maybe state that I'm an atheist but that didn't stop me admiring the collections.

definitely a major part of WA. history .worth the trip out for the day or two. not your typical country museum that one sees around the country .i believe it is now run by an outside operator.however the staff are fully committed to show and tell this rare place . the buildings and art treasures are unique for Australia. for a aussie bloke you just look and wonder how the hell did this small band of Monks ever build this impressive complex .and how it is still standing today ?? Their faith, god ,??
This is impressive when you really take time to wonder how ? No hesitation in saying this place has been the high of a WA tour.

Hello Jack,
We are so glad you enjoyed your visit and thank you for your wonderful feedback. It definitely is a unique and amazing place.
The town is in fact 100% operated by the monks, and their staff, which makes it even more special.
We hope to see you back at New Norcia in the future.

What an amazing historic town New Norcia is. The town tour is a must and throw in the museum and art gallery to learn more about its history. The buildings are incredible, what a lot of work. The chapel is spectacular and we were blessed to hear Father Robert play the piped organ and also piano, truly a gifted musician. We spent two full days there and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Normal clothes are ok but would suggest good shoes for walking around, basically roads and paths.

Both my father and I will be over in Perth from 14/4/15 until 20/4/15, we would love to visit New Norcia whilst we are there. Just wondering how far in advance we have to book?
Looking forward to your reply,
Cheers
