Museum of China Tibetan Medicine Culture is destination #1 in Xining. Around 20 minutes from city center by taxi, but it worth it. In Museum I've seen the biggest tangha in the world. I wonder if it is the longest masterpiece of art in the world? Amazing place, a lot of interesting and stunning items. In contrast with Tibetan Museum in Lhasa no propaganda at all.

It's located approximately 45 min outside the city centre. Several buses go there, we took bus 1, got of at the end and walked to the museum in about 10 min. It is not Only a very beautiful building, insides information is interesting and the thangka at the 2nd floor is beyond imagination. Will take at least two hours to walk around.

This museum highlights traditional Tibetan life, medicine's, astronomy and science. But the big wow factor is the 620 metre long thangka (scroll) which charts Tibetan history, and took 400 artists about 4 years to complete.Admission cost is 60 yuan and Bus no 1 will drop you off diagonally opposite a beautifully manicured park in which the museum is in.I showed the bus driver the name of the museum in Mandarin and he indicated where I was to get off in Mandarin( I only speak English) all for the cost of 1 yuan one way

Don't go if you're foreign, they won't let you in anyway. Just to be clear. I have a residency permit, passport, current Z1 visa, a Suikang code, and certificate showing I don't have Covid-19.
But still no entry.

Do not miss this museum ! Even if a little bit outside of the city. From the center - ximen - a taxi will drive you there for 22 yuan. In bus, several changes make it difficult because destinations are written in Chinese and only a few people speak English ... The collection of medical tangkas is really beautiful and quite well documented in English. While the temporary exhibition is only in Chinese but you can get a audioguide. At the second floor is the longest tangka ever seen , 600 meters long, with the life of various buddhas, boddhisattvas, Indian pandits, the representation of the major Buddhist deities, the karmapas and the dalai lamas over the centuries... The entrance fee is 60 yuan and it 's fine !

It's worth a trip to see the huge Thanka inside which was worked on by over 40 people and shows the history of Buddhism in Tibet. It would be nice if it had a little more explanation, though. There are also very interesting charts on Tibetan medicine showing parts of the nervous, blood and other systems as well as commond diseases and remedies. Shouldn't be missed!

We are into the arts and history, and really enjoyed this Museum. We encountered locals who traveled from their villages to view the Thanka as it has special meaning to them. Think we spent around 5 hours just looking around and marvelling at what the Tibetans has studied and documented. The Museum was free.
If you walk around the back there is another entry to view the Thanka this was so beautiful I marvelled at it for hours and look loads of photos. I feel it such an important piece of work to the art world despite you being religious or not.
As there is nothing around to eat, I was grateful we had some snacks to keep us going. Do pack some if you plan to spend a day here.

This is an interesting look into the past of Tibet- a shame really that it is not in Tibet. We really enjoyed the museum, although we stayed for a couple of hours, you could spend much more time there. Not only does it cover medicaine but also cultural heritage, literature, astronomy and also one of the largest Tangkas. It is well worth the visit.

Nice museum for raining days, quite big with 3 floors to visit. 15 mn taxi from downtown. We were very impressed by the great tangka which is worth the visit but also by the Tibetan traditional medical part.

Easy to catch Bus #1 from Dongguan Street. Takes about 30 minutes and costs 1 Yuan. Easy to find place to get off as a large street sign nearby.
Sign says entry is free but you do need to pay 60 yuan to see the Thangka.
The latter is quite amazing... 750 m long so go to it first.. It takes at least an hour to view it. Well worth the trip.
