Beautiful riverside park. Stayed overnight in Changsha for logistics, but were pleasantly surprised by the Orange Island walk.  We arrived dark, the subway was taking a steam locomotive, otherwise we couldn't keep up. 3 km walk to the monument, it looks like a steam locomotive can be taken one way. This is fantastic city lighting! I'd advise you to come in when it's still light, take a walk and wait for the illuminations. We were with a guide, so everything was easy to organize, nowhere to stray and passed in line. China Discovery helped with the organization. It is a very interesting experience to immerse yourself in the life of a living modern city, because China is not only historical palaces and temples, to find yourself in the natural environment, among young people, not tourists is very interesting. Everything in the park is completely comfortable and conveniently organized.

The most important tourist attraction for many visitors is a 32-meter-tall granite statue of Chairman Mao Zedong's head when he was about 32 years old. Changsha takes great pride in being the place where young Mao received his education and where he developed some of his communist ideals. The construction of this statue took place between 2007 and 2009.

We walked the whole Orange island, took some pictures and then caught the little shuttle bus back down. It was a little drizzly, but was very busy with both locals and tourists. A nice outing if you have an hour or two. Very neat and very clean.

On a recent trip to Changsha, we were seeing many of the sites in the city but in the afternoon needed to take a break so headed off to Orange Island Park. The main feature of the park is a giant sculpture of a young Mao, and it is definitely something to see, but there is much to enjoy on the journey there.

We were going to walk, but I strongly suggest taking the tram and then walking, otherwise it is quite a long stroll. The walk from where the tram leaves off to the end of the island where the statue is is very comfortable, and the landscaping is delightful. It was an overcast day when we were there so it was very peaceful, not at all crowded but the island is spacious enough that I can imagine even on a bright and shiny day it not being overwhelming.

The island itself is a beautifully landscaped park, and the a great views of the city from either side of the island so there is much to enjoy. Take your time and take it all in.

We arrived early in the morning to avoid the summer heat. Most of the shops were still not open. However, the park was open and allowed people in to walk around.

The big feature is to get a picture in front of the statue. Be prepared to walk, bike, or take an electric bus to get there. We walked. It was a great morning thing to do.

This place is popular for people to go and get exercise. There are runners and walkers around the water way.

This island can be busy, they often have a huge lights display in the winter, about 100¥ an adult to enter. But most of the island is quiet and has lots of grass you can walk on. There's are some peaceful places with ponds and buildings with a Chinese look. The Mao ze Dong statue is at the end of the island. It's a LONG walk. But usually in the later part of the day or if there is a big event you can rent different types of bicycles to get around. On a nice day that is a nice activity. You can also pay to ride the bus around. It was maybe 20¥ a ticket and you can get on the bus maybe 4 or 5 times. If you want to see the whole island this is a good option. I think there is an outside pool here too and a big sand pit to play in. It is course sand. There is no fee to get on the island. And they have some food places near the center where the road crosses over the island. Overall this is a nice place to visit.

Orange Park Island is free if you are prepared to walk 4km from the train station to see the statue of a young Mao Zedong (Former Chairman of the Communist Party of China).

The statue depicts Zedong in his youth as he completed his secondary schooling at the First Provincial Normal School in Changsha. It is believed here that he came into contact with Western philosophy amongst other things.

The statue was completed and open to the public in 2009. It is made up of more than 8000 pieces of granite, which were mined from Fujian. It stands at 32 m tall and 41 m wide.

If you are not prepared to walk you take the parks electric vehicle for 20 RMB. This will allow you to jump off and get back on a total of four times at designated marked stops. Each marked spot sells drinks and light and snacks at a 20 per cent mark up.

I went to the park to see the statue and not the park itself. The statue looks very much the same as it does in the photos. The park itself is nothing special.

Orange Island is amazing. Changsha has so much history and Orange Island is a key element to that history. Surrounded by beautiful gardens a gentle stroll around the island is certainly worthwhile, especially visiting the massive sculpture of a "Young" Mao.

Aug2018. The island is too big to easily walk around. Best to take the shuttle. Mostly trees and a few buildings. The only interesting thing to see is the huge rock bust of the young Mao Zedong. Also can stand at the extreme Southern tip of the island and look out over the water. FrancisTLim.
