If you love Victorian houses, this is a great neighborhood for a stroll. Every year, they also have a Christmas season Historic Oakwood house candle light tour where several homes in the neighborhood open their doors to show off their decorated Victorian interior splendor. This event has a nominal ticket fee for 3-4 hours of touring. It is a wonderful... More

If you want to know the history of Raleigh and historical Oakwood, then you need to visit this area. A nice way to spend a Saturday.

For anyone who loves architecture, history, or pretty walks in general, this is a must-do. The street(s) contain a wonderful collection of historic homes that range in all kinds of colours, styles, and sizes. The fact that the homes are located in such a beautiful area as well, streets lined with cracked old pavement and towering moss laden trees, gives... More

Because one of our party was unable to walk much, we just did a driving tour. We didn't find where we could get a tour guide (available at a Visitor Center, and Museum, primarily for walking tour, but could be used for driving tour as well) until we were leaving, but even without a guide, it was worth an hour... I wish I could afford to live in this area. The houses are all so beautiful and well-maintained. I'll drive through on my way to work just to see the lovely abodes. You can pick up a Historic Walking Tour map & guide at some of the local visitors centers (GRCVB Visitor Information Center 500 Fayetteville Street & Capital Area... More

We could not say which we enjoyed more -- the homes and their history and character -- or the historic and lovely Oakwood cemetery. Highly recommended for a Sunday or other-day drive in old Raleigh

A friend has a house in the Oakwood District, and I have to say, its an adorable neighborhood for the most part. Its not on league with Savannah or other places with great architecture, but the houses are in large part pretty well maintained and in keeping with the style. A few are obvious "newly minted Victorians" where the house... More

While you can drive, walk or bike through this neighborhood by yourself, it's best to have a tour guide to point out a lot of the architectural features, which old Raleigh families lived here and the general history of this unique neighborhood. Oakwood is "pretty" and worth gawking over.

To really get the best of this area you should find out about the history and take a tour for sure vs. walk around (which is fine) but a tour for history and architecture buffs is good. It's not Savannah but it's pretty cool!

Fun old historical homes. Interesting to see. Combine with Oakwood Cemetery visit. Loved the charm of these old places.
