This site is located on land once owned by the parents of James K. Polk,...

This site is located on land once owned by the parents of James K. Polk, the 11th U.S. president. The state historic site commemorates significant events in the Polk administration: the Mexican-American War, settlement of the Oregon boundary dispute, and the annexation of California. Reconstructions of typical homestead buildings—a log house, separate kitchen, and barn—are authentically furnished. The visitor center features a film on Polk's life and exhibits on his family and tumultuous presidency.

The visit took about 1 hour. It's a great way to educate kids on history without spending a lot of money.

The wife and I decided to stop here with our two young boys. Being a history buff myself, I must admit I didn't know much about Polk. Being able to wonder the grounds with my boys and being able to attempt to explain what life was like back in the day was awesome. The staff was very kind, welcoming and... More

Fun to explore and explain to a 5yr old. Some walking involved on unlevel ground but not hard to do. Very interesting

Not much has changed her since I was a kid. Good learning experience for kids interested in history. Shows how folks lived in this area years ago.

Took the family here while traveling in Charlotte area. It was educational and the kids loved running around in the yard. The museum was interesting and I learned a lot about President Polk. The tour guide was knowledgeable. It's a nice afternoon activity.

Like me, I imagine few people know much about our 11th president. This is a great place to start to get to know about him, his political career, his family and the early history of this part of North Carolina. Our guide was accommodating and knowledgeable. We learned a lot and loved the experience. Highly recommended.
