Lake James State Park has tons of stuff to do and lots of trails. We chose the area called Paddy's Creek, near the swimming area, to start our hike around a portion of the lake. We didn't hike the complete trail, but took a 30 min hike in and back out. Very easy and very pretty!

Lake James State Park has a pristine beach for swimming with beautiful views of the lake and mountains, hiking and biking trails, and ranger-led hikes. The restrooms are clean and plentiful, as are gazebos for gatherings and cooking. There are canoes and kayaks to rent. Near the beach are lovely shaded areas with picnic tables to enjoy. They've also installed new... More

Beautiful clean park. It has everything from camping to swimming on a sandy beach. If it gets too hot you can picnic under a pavilion or under lots of shade covered picnic tables beside beautiful Lake James. Almost forgot to mention there are many nice places to fish.

I love to get out and hike and am always looking for new spots to go. I had never been here before so I decided to check it out and I was glad that I did. There are actually 2 parts to the park, the Catawba River part and the Lake James portion. I stopped off at the Catawba part... More

Lake James is everything a lake should be, big, beautiful, and fun to play on and in! The state park is one of the nicest I have ever seen....sand beach, beautiful public building with dressing rooms and bathrooms, places to eat, boats to rent and a fabulous place to swim. There are great camping areas on the water that are... More

I live five 10 minutes from this park across the lake from me. It's attractive and well maintained with walking paths, mountain biking paths and swimming area. The only shortcoming is lack of docking for boats. There are some boating campsites but not many.

Stopped in on Labor Day for a short visit, the office and gift shop appear to be new. The beach was clean and not real crowded. The restrooms were clean and the Park Ranger was very helpful. Thanks guys and Happy 100th Birthday NC State Parks.

We had visited the old Lake James beach location a number of years back and were not impressed. We decided to give it another try, not realizing they had created this new beach location at Paddy's Creek. What a pleasant surprise! We were there on a Thursday and arrived around 11:30. The beach house was clean and in good repair.... More

So I booked a camping site at the Catawba River site of the Lake James State park on Thursday July 21st through Sunday July 24. My mother and I planned on spending three nights blissfully enjoying summer lake camping. First off this state park does not allow alcohol, if you need that to have fun this is not your place,...
