About a one mile hike through the Sand Dunes. These dunes are the highest dunes in the United States. There was only one other couple with children there when we were there. It is fantastic and not a hard climb. We did have a dog with us and the wind was blowing sand close to the ground. It seemed to... More

Like many beaches in OBX, this is another spot where your kids can explore, you can go shelling, and it's peaceful.

We stop here every single time we visit OBX. It's an absolutely amazing natural phenomenon. One minute you feel like your trekking through the desert and the next your staring at the ocean. If you're more adventurous I highly recommend sand boarding here. You'll have to get a free permit from the park office. They also have the hang gliding... More

This is a great evening visit as sun is going down. During other times it will be too hot during summer months. After many visits over the years, it's been interesting to see the changes in the dunes. Kids love to slide roll and jump down steep hills so dont expect them to come home free from sand.

Fun to play in the sand, could be a strenuous walk if not in fairly good shape. Stop at Kitty Hawk Kites and grab a kite...lots of fun for kids and kids at heart

when i was younger this sand dune was quite the hike to get to the top. after hurricane winds got ahold of it, sand was spread everywhere. there used to be a putt-putt place on the corner but it's covered in sand. it's still a good walk and you can see long distances on clear days. in june first or... We stopped here for a little break in the day. It was very hot but kids loved climbing on the dunes and splashing in the puddles. There were lots of parasailers to look at. If you can find some shade this is a nice little free spot.

Another world! As we transitioned from parking lot to some sand to LOTS of sand, we felt transported to an outdoor adventure. We crossed a few dunes, sidestepped a few ponds, and eventually discovered the bay. Romantic, quiet, and beautiful watching the sun set. We followed a different return path with some eerie tracks and a different set of ponds.... More
