Big Bald 50 mile views
Apr 2020

We hiked from the Streets Gap Rd. trail head. Access road is very rutted from Puncheon Fork Rd., so unless you have a jeep or 4x4 pickup approach this trail head from the north by Higgins Creek Road off exit 50 in Tennessee. Trail is well maintained and undulates through the forest with only a few steep uphill stretches. Views from the Bald are well worth the hike.

A Noun, Not an Adjective

We traversed Big Bald in the middle of a 21-mile day, one of our top-3 mileage days of our full A.T., so we didn't spend much time gawking, although it was a very nice day for the view!. I'm not sure why the grass is kept relatively short on most of the balds; it definitely takes away from the feel of the AT as a "wilderness" trail.

Great Views on the AT

I love going to Big Bald. The only issue is getting through the Wolf Laurel gate. It’s a shame that the gated community limits public access

The best view of the area.

I have heard of the Bald my whole life but had never been. The walk from the parking area was reasonable and not steep. The views were amazing but I would recommed binoculars to best expirience the views. If I am correct, I belive I saw a famliar landmark to me that had to be 60 miles away!

Two for one... Big Bald and the Appalachian Trail
Jun 2017 • Couples
At a recent June stay at the Buck House Inn B&B we spent an afternoon up at Big Bald. At the base of the climb up to Big Bald (an easy hike by the way) is the Appalachian Trail. We chose to hike a few miles on the trail before going up to the top of Big Bald. Beautiful pastures, gorgeous mountain views and thick mountain foliage greeting our eyes. A few small deers popping up during our walk just goes to indicate how peaceful this place was. Highly recommended for anyone in the area.

We had a great day hiking. Views were awesome. We are amateurs at this and we made it to the top without any problems.

This is an awesome place with spectacular views. The surrounding areas are frequented by hikers on the Appalachian trail and are great to talk to.

Views for 50+ miles, 360 degrees, and magnificent!

I'm always thrilled to hike up to Big Bald! It's right on the Appalachian Trail, so after parking, it's about a 3/4 mile walk to get there. Two different routes are available; the actual AT trail, or a slower, more gradual 'road' that is a bit further, but neither are too long. It's a bit of a steep walk up, but you'll never regret the magnificent views!!

A “Sound of Music” Experience
Jun 2016 • Friends
Big Bald as well as Max Patch reminds me of the scene in the “Sound of Music” where Julie Andrews sings “The hills are alive with the Sound of Music.” At the top of Big Bald, elevation 5,516 feet, you have a 360 degree view of the surrounding mountains and valleys. Truly a picturesque moment. You are at cloud level, so views will come in and out of sight. My boots got wet as I walked off the trail due to condensation of the grass from clouds passing over. The only way to access Big Bald is via the Appalachian Trail or a side trail from the Wolf Laurel Resort (ski and golf). Worth the hike on a good weather day.
