We stopped at the Lejeune Memorial Gardens while passing through Jacksonville. Beautiful gardens and memorials to the men and women who courageously served their county. The Lejeune Memorial Greenway connects to the gardens and runs along the perimeter of Camp Lejeune. We hiked a few miles along the greenway as well and enjoyed beautiful weather. Overall, a somber experience but beautiful place to be outside.

Located in Jacksonville, NC next to the NC State Veterans Cemetery and adjacent to Camp Johnson, a small base of Camp Lejeune, this secluded, wooded area encompassing approximately 5 acres and dedicated as Lejeune Memorial Gardens, contains the Beirut Memorial which was erected to honor the 241 Marines, Navy Corpsman, and Army members killed in the truck bomb in Beirut, Lebanon on October, 23rd 1983. The 241 names are engraved on the wall and guarded by a full size sculptured bronze Marine. Walking through to the next monument is the 911 memorial which is a 2000 pound, 10 feet long, steel girder from one of the NY twin towers and donated to the Marines of the 2nd Marine Division from the NY Firefighters on July 4th, 2003. A short walk across a bridge brings you to the Vietnam Memorial. This is a beautiful pool with five fountains within and covered with a large, green dome. Surrounding the pool are approximately 168 glass panels with the names of the over 58,000 KIA in Vietnam engraved in alphabetical order. This is one of the most visited memorials in the area because of its sobering beauty. After a short walk towards highway 24 we approach the newest memorial which is the Montford Point Marine Memorial. This beautiful, large memorial is dedicated to the approximately 22,000 African American Marines that trained at Camp Johnson prior to WW II and was the only training base for African Americans before the armed forces were integrated by President Truman. Also located on board Camp Johnson is the Montford Point Museum dedicated to and containing numerous artifacts of the boot camp these Marines went through. Finally, the other end of the the memorial contains phase one of the future Museum of the Marine which will be dedicated to those Marines and Navy Corpsman who trained and deployed from Camp Lejeune. Phase one is a pool which has the largest, three dimensional Marine Corps emblem standing in the center and 15 feet tall. The next phase will be a museum building, fronted by five 20 foot flag poles (already in place), and a life-size statute of a Navy Corpsman treating a wounded Marine laying on the ground. The Corpsman Memorial is dedicated to our brother Navy Corpsman. The Lejeune Memorial Gardens, containing these five beautiful memorials are worth the time to travel down/up highway 17 in NC to visit. Plenty of places to eat and stay while in the area. A self-guided tour of the largest amphibious training base in the Marine Corps (Camp Lejeune) is also available.

Jacksonville is a military community and it shows with some of the wonderful memorials and tributes that they have in the area to honor Veterans and first respondents.

There are several different areas to visit here. A steel beam from 9-11, Beirut memorial, Vietnam memorial. They are still expanding. A solemn place when you read the names on the wall. There are places to sit to reflect upon what you are seeing. A short walk to the different areas.

I am a Vietnam Veteran and like walking around here. Been walking almost every day for the last few months. We walk from the Beirut Memorial , through the Montford Point memorial, come in the back way to the Vietnam Memorial wall. I know a lot of names on that wall. Then walk up to where the Museum of the Marine of the Carolina's is going to be built, then back in reverse. It is a nice calm reflective walk. Many times Younger Marines and Sailors (Corpsmen) will ask me to tell my story. I like seeing the new Generation of what the Marine Corps looks like! Semper Fi all!

Beruit, Viet Nam, 9-11, and now the new Monford Point Marines Memorial. All are clean, well kept, relaxing, and beautiful memorials. All are in one convieant place with plenty of parking and areas to sit. Then just across the hwy is the City of Jacksonville's Freedom Memorial Water Fall. It has beautiful flowers and seating also. All are within walking distance from Camp Johnson Marine Corp Base.
