An absolutely fabulous tour by Dan. We took the early morning tour (8:30 am) which I would recommend as it is not as hot as a mid day tour. Dan was very knowledgeable and shared great information about the history of the horses and Corolla. The booking process was very easy, we were able to sign waivers electronically and we were able to check in remotely (Covid). The HUMMER vehicles are comfortable (individual seats as opposed to bench seating that other tour companies have) and are covered to keep you out of the direct sun. This is the second time we have gone with this touring company. I highly recommend and you should definitely ask for Dan!!

We went on the Wild Adventure Horse Tour on a Thursday at 5:30pm. We had a group of 5 adults and 1 baby, and the group we shared the H-1 Hummer with had 2 adults, 1 teenager, and 1 senior citizen. Our tour guide was Ned Y. and he was great! Funny, told some great stories, and was so knowledgeable about the horses, the history behind them, and the area in general. Everyone in our vehicle seemed to have a wonderful time. We saw so many horses! We saw a few right away and then saw several more groups. Ned clearly went out of his way several times to make sure everyone in our group could get a good look at each group of horses we saw, no matter where in the vehicle we were sitting. I was able to get plenty of photos and videos - even from the middle of the vehicle. We really enjoyed ourselves and thought that especially for the money, this was a great decision and we’d recommend it to anyone. We stayed on the southern end of OBX so we made a day of this trip by spending time in Nags Head, Kitty Hawk, and Duck prior to taking the Wild Horses Tour. It was my favorite day of my vacation by far!

It was super easy to book a tour online. We booked a private tour for our family of 6, and the hummer was roomy: we were at a distance far enough from our driver/guide that we felt comfortable taking our masks off. Our guide Giovanna was wonderful: friendly, knowledgeable, and a skilled driver. She gave us lots of great information, not just about the horses but about the area in general. And she found us two harems of horses to see :). Once we found them she very kindly maneuvered in various directions so everyone in the vehicle had a clear view. All of the kids (ages 9-13) remained engaged and interested throughout. The drive, aside from the horses, was an absolutely gorgeous trip. Although we arrived in OBX in a huge SUV with 4 wheel drive, I am VERY glad we did not drive ourselves to North Beach. We never would have found horses on our own, and the tire ruts were quite deep in some places. Vehicles need not just 4 wheel drive but also significant ground clearance too. We passed a Jeep Cherokee stuck on our way back.

We enjoyed a tour with Wild Horse Adventure Tours a few years ago, so when we were visiting the Outer Banks with some family who had never been here before we did not hesitate to book another Hummer tour. Stu was a great guide and was able to find two groups of horses even though it is early in the season. We really enjoy the modified Hummvees and Stu always circled back so passengers on both side had a great view of the horses from the elevated seats. It was a windy and chilly early morning ride, and blankets were provided to those who wanted them, but well worth a little chill to experience a side of the island that is very lightly developed and not at all commercialized. I highly recommend booking with WHAT if you want to see the 4x4 beaches and hopefully some horses too!

So when you come down to Corolla, of course seeing the horses is one of those things you have to do. There are a few tours available, but we chose this one because, who doesn’t want to ride in a Hummer? And because they give you an entire row, even if there’s just two of you, so you don’t have to pack elbow to elbow with random people. The vehicles are laid out very nice, they’re roomy (some of the other tours looked to have kinda cramped seating).
We loaded up and headed out with John as our driver/guide. If you book this tour and you are lucky enough to get John as your guide, you are in for a pretty amazing experience. I’ll start by saying John absolutely made our tour memorable, guy has a personality you don’t forget, such a good dude. Hanging out with him for two hours was a blast, we talked a little bit about his service in the Marines on the drive up, and he has a huge passion for the horses and the outer banks which was really cool. We learned all kinds of neat facts about the horses, how they ended up here, how they socialize, how they move around, John knew it all. As we drove around we learned about the history and geography of the outer banks, we learned about different expeditions, we learned about the maritime forest and how the coastline is forever moving. Hanging out with John, hearing stories, and learning about different aspects of the area and the wildlife was worth the price of admission all by itself.
On to the horses, John told us there are approximately 100 of them in the area. If there are around 100, he found the majority of them for us. We got to see so many groups, even the new foals. John made sure we were all able to get some amazing videos and pictures, he gave us plenty of time to take our shots, even repositioned the vehicle multiples times so everyone on board had a front row seat. This was the best outing we took while in OBX, and that’s saying a lot.
When we got back, I realized I didn’t have any cash on me, and we really wanted to give John a tip. Ran across the street to the store to get cash, came back and John was gone. We probably looked like crazy people, but we followed the line of hummers up to the gas station just so we could find John, give him a tip, and thank him again. So do make sure to have cash on you if you plan on tipping, and you’ll definitely want to tip. We’d recommend this to absolutely everybody, don’t think twice, it’s worth it.
John, if you get to read this, you rock. Thanks once again for giving us an experience we’ll never forget.

For our anniversary weekend visit to Duck/Corolla, NC, we looked forward to this off-road Humvee tour to see the wild Spanish Mustangs. This trip did not disappoint!
Our tour guide, Rich, is a long time resident and a recognized local historian who offered valuable insight to the history of the early settlement of the Outer Banks and the introduction of the wild mustangs. These horses are the most tranquil and serene animals and live protected but with the locals in the sand dunes of Corolla and Carova Beach. This tour took us a few miles north on to the beach.
Along the surprisingly well traveled (for late October) beach, Rich stopped to show us shipwreck artifacts, sea turtle nests, and “fulgurite” (sand melted by lightning strikes) formations. Rich plucked fulgurites from the surf for each couple/family to take home as a souvenir.
A two hour tour took us through beach dune “roads” almost up to the Virginia state line to see 20 or so mustangs in harems. We learned the history of this beach access only community including the Coast Guard rescue station, volunteer fire department, and famous local residents.
Some useful details for planning your trip - booking online was easy. Masks are needed during tour while we navigate the COVID pandemic. Seating is spread out to observe social distancing. Bring a jacket after Labor Day. Hit the bathroom before you board the Humvee because there is no stopping for bio-breaks along the way. Humvee has a canvass roof but 360° views are not obstructed. Price per person was very reasonable. Tip was certainly well earned for our experience.
Enjoy!

Our extended family totally enjoyed the 2 hour tour of the Wild Horse/Nature Reserve in Corolla and Swan Beach NC area.
Our tour guide was Stu Laird. He was friendly, knowledgeable, and interesting. Stu did a wonderful job of showing us up close (as possible) the beautiful horses, the natural habitat, and he did a great job of mixing in the history of the area and the evolution of the horses' lives from their arrival in the US till today.
There are very very few places we've enjoyed seeing/experiencing more than this wild and wonderful place.
We wholeheartedly recommend this adventure for anyone who appreciates the natural beauty of the outer banks of NC, and the beautiful animals who inhabit the area. When you sign up, ask for Stu to be your guide. You will be glad you did!!

We went on a Wild Horse Tour with “Outlaw” Tom.. It was by far the best family excursion we have taken. He was so friendly and his humor kept us laughing the whole time.
He was so accommodating, patient and gentle with the two toddlers we had on board (2 & 3 years old). Especially when it came to the bumpy ride… They haven’t stopped talking about Mr. Tom, riding on the beach and seeing horses… Our 11 year old loved hearing his wild stories and seeing all the horses too.
Tom knew so much about the horses and Corolla. He was on point to where the horses were. We got to see so many majestic stallions. We even got some safe close up pictures of them playing and rolling around in the sand on the beach.
What amazed us was how sincere he was to these beautiful horses and their habitat. He was so mindful to keep distance for their sake but to get us beautiful pictures. He was all about preserving the environment these horses thrive on and following all the rules. We absolutely loved his generosity and empathy for these amazing animals.
He was very mindful and safe driving on the beach and thru the rough terrain. We felt very safe with him and in the Hummer (it was a very safe, well made vehicle, it had actual seatbelts for our children’s car seats to hook into and sturdy roll bars).
You can tell Tom truly loves what he does, which made this tour ten times more meaningful and memorable.
Everyone was super friendly. I’m sure every tour guide is fantastic, just from seeing the faces of all the people exiting their H1 Hummers… But we wanted to recommend you request Tom and get a private tour.. It was by far the best decision we made. It made our trip to North Carolina the best experience ever.
Thank you Tom!

A bit pricey, but worth it!
Despite the slightly higher price, we chose this one because it came highly recommended by the nonprofit organization most responsible for the care and protection of these magnificent animals.
FYI, we were told the Corolla Wild Horse Fund also trains the drivers for this company and two others.
The two hour tour takes you up the beach and onto the "streets" behind the dunes. There, literally, are no street signs, but what seems like simple paths are actual streets with a scattering of houses.
The horses are wild and used to the vehicles, so they are not frightened away. As a result, the tour guide is able to get up close to the animals without spooking them.
Our guide, Stu, was excellent.
Stu actually lives in that area, so he is very well acquainted with individual horses and their ways. Deeply knowledgeable about their history and care, he was a wealth of information. There was no question he could not answer.
Altogether, a fantastic ride in the Hummer with tiered seating (sit up higher if you can), with a whole row to ourselves due to Covid restrictions.
You WILL be required to wear a mask during the tour, and there are NO bathroom breaks so visit the restroom on premise before setting out.

Go to their web site to find out. I would be surprised if they weren't running these trips in late March. We went in late October. It was chilly but sunny and they had lap blankets for because the vehicles are open air jeeps.
